Love-Token:-Someone-Really-Loved-Joe

This is a very ornate rendition of "Joe" on an 1880 Morgan dollar. Love tokens on Dollar coins are much scarcer, presumably due to the original manufacturing cost. This one shows the remnants of a pin-this was intended to be worn on clothing.

This weighs 24.4 grams, so even considering the weight of the pin remnants, even the elaborate carving only caused the loss of about 10% of the original weight of the coin.

Given the size and the pin-mount, I'm wondering if this would better be classified as a "name badge" rather than a "love token". Joe's name was clearly intended to be read from a distance; I would see it as something more appropriate for Joe himself to wear, rather than his wife/girlfriend/mother/etc.

The meander pattern around the border seems to me both deliberate and meaningful; it may point towards either Joe or the artist being someone interested in classical Greek art or history?

@greasyfingers, the style looks old, as does the making of it into a pin, but I can't be certain of its age or where this one came from. The collector most recently lived in the Ottawa area, and some are definitely from this area. Some definitely came from elsewhere, so I suspect that he was collecting them. Canada did not have dollar size silver coins during the main era of love token making, and I am sure that quite a few US silver dollars made their way north.

It's an outstanding piece. That could anchor a very nice display of vintage love tokens.

@sap, you could be right, although I don't think that men in that era usually wore stuff like this. I'm using the term love token rather loosely-I haven't checked how the keen collectors have decided to classify inscribed objects like this.
