I am not an expert on this coin type, but it just doesn't look right to me. Especially in the area around the eagles legs, very weak strike and it looks like there are two left legs side by side. I think this is a cast copy.

I am also not an expert but it doesn't look right to me either. I have a counterfeit Trade dollar that I bought on purpose for $1 just to compare things to and it also has these type of weak areas in the strike. Please, though.... do wait for an expert as they will be able to tell you more definitively if it is fake and why they might think so.

Quote: Thanks guys.Ive tried to buy some American coins for my collection but....Selling copies should be forbiden by the LAW. valdiman, It is against the law here in the U.S. Someone can sell a reproduction like this one, but it must be clearly stamped "copy". Of course, having a law on the books and everyone following it are two separate issues. That's why we need to educate ourselves for our own protection. Don't feel too bad though .. I would bet fake dollars to donuts that just about everyone in the hobby has been burned at least once. Did I mention my fake 1842 Seated dollar ....

I gave up on buying raw coins at shows and on ebay. Too many fakes around and too many cleaned pieces. I;ve never been burned with a fake but whizzed and cleaned, I've seen. This is a cast counterfeit, I think, there are struck fakes too. Bruce

Hey Valdiman, do a search for Trade dollar in these forums, there's a great post somewhere that deals with fake Trade dollars and how to spot them. I just read it the other day but didn't bookmark it sorry. Bruce
