I just got this one today from my dealer. The edges look good in that the pattern is correct and there are two overlaps directly across from one another. It weighs the right amount and sounds of silver. By the looks of it, do you guys agree that it is real? Also, what kind of grade would you assign based upon the detail as well as the scratches?

Looks authentic, grading I will leave it to the pros., but I would say VF-, lapel on the Kings armour could almost be seen.

Archraz At $18 you certainly do not have to worry about that coin. If it was a contemporary counterfeit it would be worth more than that. Just the silver alone makes it a good deal.

I tend to grade these coins a bit harder than most but I would call the coin Fine given the scratches and somewhat uneven strike. The eye appeal is fairly good and color is nice.

I think you got a VERY good deal.

At that price you really got a good deal. I agree with Swamper, fine condition, but I would look closely at the discoloration in the field in front of the portrait and in the "O" of Carolus, could be some filled chopmarks. Nice addition to the collection, a 200 yr + old coin that would have circulated in the US as a dollar coin in it's day.

swamperbob- thanks for the input! I agree with the fine. And I am about 99% sure that it is real

jfransch- very good eye. Truth be told, there were some gross brown, crusty spots on there. I just tapped them with a toothpick and it chipped right off (inside the "o" and under the king's hair tie).
