when they come up for auction. Even when they suffer from environmental damage such as this particular example.

Apparently, the seller had no clue what they had. Has USA on front and lines on back (match striker?). Match striker, haha, that is funny stuff

RedBook mentions that a much less valuable restrike was produced circa 1862, "the A passes under, instead of over, the S."
I cannot really tell what is under or over on that coin so someone either got a nice deal on a Bar Copper or they overpaid for a 19th century restrike.

I thought about that as well biokemist6. I have examined the coin closely and it appears to be the restrike. A bit steep given the corrosion. Still highly collectible.

When I started collecting coins (primarily wheats received from my grandfather) I had a 1981 RedBook and remember distinctly seeing the bar cent and it was my favorite coin. I can't tell you why, but I still love it to this day. I don't have one yet...

Me either Mike. I sure would like to get one (even a lower grade example) for my Colonial set. Colonials have always been a passion of mine even though some can get quite pricey.

From what I see it looks like the restrike.
