I have a Whitman Kennedy half book 1964 to 2002 and it has a hole or slot fo a 1964 Proof Some members on here said the Red Book lists no 1964 Proof. I emailed JP's Coin Supplies about this error in the book here is the email I received back I emailed back and stated my 2010 Red Book page 203 only lists the P & D Kennedy and page 334 only shows an uncirculated mint set for 1964 under proof and mint sets? Was there a Kennedy Proof Coin issued in 1964 my whitmen book clearly has a hole thst reads 1964 Proof Thanks Bruce JP's - Coin Collecting Supplies" <sales@jpscorner.com> [Add] To:"Bruce Cavanaugh" <brucec121@fastmail.fm> Date:Sun, 28 Jun 2009 10:07 AM (20 hours 47 mins ago) View as text - Show originalShow full headerBruce I am a little confused, as they in fact did make proof half dollars in 1964. They are listed in the Red Book and several are listed on ebay. Please advise. Well I do see 94 1964 Proof coins for sale on ebay? They have he P mint well I hae two 1964 no mint mark 1964 Kennedy half's I would assume the no mint mark is the P mint so how does one tell if they are proof coins? And from what I see the 2010 Red Book shows no proof 1964 Kennedy half just the P&D Mint Set?

All San Francisco Kennedy half dollars are proofs, except for those minted for the 40% silver Bicentennial uncirculated sets. Proof coins were minted at Philadelphia in 1964, but all other proofs were minted at San Francisco. Just found the above as part of the history of the Kennedy half SO I am confused? The Kennedy half's I see on ebay have no min mark so does this mean all 1964 P Kennedy half's are considered Proof's buy my Whitman album has three slots for the 1964 D, P and one saying Proof So how does one tell the proof for 1964?

Step 3PROOF COINS (CLAD OR SILVER)
You may want to choose to collect Proof half dollars, only. The 1964 half dollar has a (silver) proof edition. There was a lapse of three years (1965 to 1967) in which only "special mint sets" were made. Then, in 1968, the San Francisco mint issued regular clad Proof coins. Ninety percent silver halves returned in 1992. This option will be a more difficult one to collect, and the clad Proofs will be the least expensive.

Silver would be my pick. 1994 but a nice 1976-S Silver is also a good choice

1965-1967 Special Mint Set (no mintmark) JFK's and 1968-1970 San Francisco Mint Proof JFK's are 40% Silver The Bicentennial "1776-1976" San Francisco Mint Proof JFK's are either Clad copper-nickel (in the standard Bicentennial Proof Set) or 40% Silver (in the 3-piece Bicentennial Silver Proof Set, consisting of the Bicentennial-dated Quarter, JFK Half-Dollar and Eisenhower dollar, all in 40% Silver). (The 3-piece Bicentennial Silver Proof Set has the only 40% Silver Quarter issued by the U.S. Mint.)

Still trying to find an answer are all P mint 1964 Kennedy half's proofs? If so why are there three spaces in the album D, P and Proof? I have three 1964 Kennedy half's with no mint mark so I assume they are all P mints but then read the Proof coin was minted in Philadelphia HELP guess I am slow?

The last Philly proof set was minted in 1964. Prior to that, almost all proof coins were from Philly with the occasional rare branch mint proof. When the proof sets resumed in 1968, they were minted in San Francisco where they continue to be produced. There are three(four?) 1964 Kennedys- P and D business strikes and a Philly proof with the addition of the Accented Hair variety proof as well. Neither the P business strike nor the proof strike have a mint mark. However, it should be easy to differentiate the business strike from the proof strike unless heavily circulated. The proofs will have squared rims, brilliant mirrored fields instead of cartwheel luster, and occasionally will have cameo devices but most tend to be brilliant proofs. Details on a proof should be considerably sharper than those of an average business strike.

I have such a hard time following this thread. Where posts deleted or something? Its like Brucec is having a conversation with himself for the first four posts or something. I have seen 1964 proof sets before, so I mean, there has to be a 1964 proof Kennedy half. I think what may be throwing you off is there being no san-francisco 1964 halves. Proofs back in 1964 where still being made by the philly mint.
