This was a crack, over time with use of the die it has developed into a die break. All four appear to be from the same die, just different stages.

Thanks for the responses, when I found the first one I thought maybe a piece of metal was struck onto the coin, but then the other 3 came up. For the pictures I used one of those hand held USB Microscopes I picked up.

Budman,
The coins show a fair amount of progression of the Crack/Break in the Die. It is quite possible that you could come across additional 1955-P Cents that were struck with the same Reverse Die and put together a Collection showing the progression of the Die failure from a Die Chip to a Die Break to a Die Break to possibly imminent Die Failure.

That's seems pretty amazing that you found that progression on a '55'. I've found them on newer coins. I've got one of the usb camera's which I purchase on e-bay for under $80.00. I think they're less expensive nowadays.

Huntsman53, that is an idea, I will go back through the rest that I have and see if I can find one where the crack first started. Rockdude, that is the same one I use (DigiVision 1.3MP). I purchased it for about the same a few years ago on ebay. I only wish I could turn the leds on, off, and dim. I made a diffuser for it that covers the leds, I use it when there is too much glare. Also, the stand they give you (at least mine) really isn't worth using, is very shaky. I just found one on ebay that has the led on/off/dim features, but it is hong kong, so it might take a bit to get here. On the plus side, its only $39.00 with free shipping. If anyone is considering getting one of these, there is a big difference in the picture quality between the 640x480 and 1280x1024 resolutions, so make sure what resolution it will do. The one I have is the 1.3MP and has 320x240, 640x480, and 1280x1024.

Mine must be an old model, I was thinking of modifying it with on/off/dim, but at $39 I think ordering a new one would be easier.

Here is real Cud: Where the outside edge broke off the die, the opposite side is weaker in that area as there was no pressure to from the opposite edge in that area because of the opposing die missing the die in that area.
