Help With Macro Lenses Please - Coin Community Forum

uouo77 Valued Member United States 125 Posts	Posted 07/04/2009 10:31 am I'm so confused looking for a macro lens. I have a Nikon D40 and so far this is the list I have come up with. Nikon 60mm f/2.8 - $480 Nikon 60mm f/2.8 with Extra-low Dispersion Glass - $540 Nikon 105mm f/2.8 - $899 Sigma 105mm f/2.8 - $479 Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 - $419 Tokina AT-X 100mm f/2.8 - $399 Is Nikon that much better or are they adding $$$ for the name? I don't know much about the other manufactures, are they any good? Any help would be appreciated Report this Post to the Staff

bill069 Pillar of the Community United States 608 Posts	Posted 07/04/2009 11:27 am Nikon equipment is top of the line. If you are just looking to photograph just your coins, look into extension rings which are placed between your camera and lens. This will provide close-up focusing at a reduced cost. KurtS Pillar of the Community United States 5318 Posts	Posted 07/04/2009 4:34 pm I have the Nikkor 60mm f2.8, and here's an example of what it does: The only downside to the 60 is lighting will be a bit trickier due to cast shadows on the coin. SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 07/07/2009 02:11 am Of the bunch you posted, IMO the Tokina is the hands-down winner. It's the cheapest, yet it gives up nothing in image quality to the rest. The only consideration to me is that the Nikon 60mm is internal focus, where the others are not and will change in length as they focus. This will need to be accommodated in your shot setup. I am shooting with a canon rebel xti with an 18-55mm lens (pretty much the stock lens) Camera was shooting on the automatic settings.
