This one came in a type set a couple weeks ago, a nice looking coin, but the edge lettering has some issues. I am not real familiar with the minting process from these days (early 1800's) so if someone can clarify how these are struck - specifically the edge dies- I would appreciate it ! Most of the edge looks fairly normal , save the incuse line that goes almost all the way around the edge , but you can see some overstamping happening where DOLLAR and FIFTY cents seem to overalp. So...what's is up with that lettering ? Is it common on these coins ? And last but not least, what caused that incuse line all the way around ? Thanks for looking ... Lets take a ride around the rim
The planchets are lettered before striking by being rolled between two edge dies each of which contains half of the inscription. One die says "Fifty cents Or" and the other says "Half a dollar". If the edge dies are not cranked all the way back to the starting point there can be overlapping of the inscriptions.
