Hi all, with copper at nearly $3.00/lb, I figure that pre-1982 cents are almost worth 2 cents each. Anyone tried selling them as scrap yet?

I wonder how long it will be before copper Memorial cents become the next "wheatie"?

Why would anyone want to buy them at the moment? Unless they are worth more than twice, I believe 4 times the current face value, melting them is not too profitable at the moment.

My husband had found some bags of coins in the garage a few months ago, he said he had a huge glass bottle filled with them starting when he was a teenager, the bottle finally broke so he put them in canvas bags and I was sorting through them. Sorted them into bowls, 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. There are 19lbs of 70's and 14lbs of 60's and about 16-18lbs of 80's. I sorted them this way to make it eaiser for me to look through them (this may take me another few years ) but I am curious as to how many cents make a pound? I am using a bathroom scale and it's just not that accurate.

I won't be melting anything, wouldn't even know where to start, just wondered how many, if anyone knows, makes a pound of pennies. Might give me an idea of just how many pennies I have here. And how long this might take me.

I had planned on taking the rejects to the coinstar at the bank, but maybe I should hang onto to all the copper cents if people are going to start melting them?

Thanks for the help
Margaret

For what it is worth it takes appx. 155 cents to make a pound so it won't be long till we see the old copper cent hitting the melting pot. Anything prior to 1982 is still copper so it has much more potential already than just spending the darn things. Now the "wheatie" is a different story as they are bringing around 3 cents for common circulated coins at my dealer so copper will have to continue to rise to get into the "wheatie" market!
