I just got this new " OCEAN IN VIEW" nickle. I looked at the date and it said 200. No last digit. I turned it alittl and the 5 showed up. Its weird. Is this some sort of error? Thanks alot!!! Also when you can actually see the 5 it is very dull and not as crisp looking as the other numbers. Edited by laxmaster92 04/18/2006 4:43 pm

Sounds like digit 5 on the die may be filled with something.

Ok heres the pic. I know its not the best picture but you can pretty much see what I'm talking about. At a first galnce it looks totally not there then it looks faded. At certain angles it is totally invisible

Now that I am examining it more it does not look like it was scratched off. Around the date there is no scratches or marks

Then I'd say it's something to do with the die which struck this coin.

it does look like a filled or worn die as to worth it is very limited but some people do pursue it . what you can do is put it in a 2x2 and collect any errors you come across. they can teach you alot by studing how they happened an so on..

Hi laxmaster
The coin looks like a struck thru grease ,,the date is not the only affected area, the field and the motto is also affected.
These kinds of coins do not have much of a value maybe .25 to .50 cents.
Do you have a pic of the reverse ?

The coin looks like a Grease Filled Die to me. I would classify it as a III-K-4 class error a "Strike Through" according to Alan Herberts PDS Classification system. He calls it a Class 1-4 rarity and assigns a value of 10 to 25 cents (over normal value) provided the coin is Mint State. He assigns no value to a worn coin - because of potential circulation damage. If you notice part of the motto - specifically WE TRUST is also effected as is a small portion of the field. Likely a blob of grease fell into the coining chamber.
