The US Mint's
production figures for the 2009 Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar are
325,000 Proof and
125,000 Uncirculated. There will be 50,000 more Proof Dollars included in the forthcoming 'Abraham Lincoln Coin & Chronicles Set' (which is limited to 50,000 sets).
The Proof version is the slightly more valuable of the two. This is because collectors prefer the Proof versions of the Commemorative Dollars in general speaking, and the Lincoln Dollar in particular has been regarded by many to look aesthetically superior as a Proof.
The 2001 American Buffalo Commemorative Silver Dollar has done very well in terms of value, and I would say that the Lincoln should also do well. The Lincoln Dollar will be desired by
Lincoln Cent collectors as a perfect augmentation to a
Lincoln Cent collection, and the
Lincoln Cent is America's most widely collected coin.
The Proof version will probably continue to be worth more than the (rarer!) Uncirculated version for the foreseeable future. Coin Dealers will consider the Proof version to be the better of the two to have in a display case, simply because it's more 'eye-catching'.
I have both versions of this coin, and I like them both!
