Hi,

Would this be what they call a near 6 variety. Found this one in my pocket at noon. Cant find any pictures of far 6 variety to compare.

I believe it is a near 6 variety but these pictures can help you tell for sure.

I agree, near 6 :)

I really wish coin guides would offer measurements... Some of the differences they illustrate are so small and difficult to identify, that the photos (or the photos with lines) don't often help. Sure, you can't measure the difference between a near 6 and far 6 with a normal ruler, though you could try it with a microscope.

From what I have read and been told,the 1996 definately has 2 die varieties.All mint sets have the near 6.(I have a mint set-near 6),while coins made for circulation have either the near 6 or a far 6(A later die used)Hope this might help a bit.Also I agree with Gebs the ATTACHED 6 is not a variety.

I've tried scanning them, and still I am having a terrible time differentiating between the two. I have seven 1996 nickels and I am fairly certain 2 of them are FAR using my 10x loupe. This is the hardest coin I have to discern (with possible exception to the 1965 penny).
