I remember there was a comment posted that mintmark "S" is scarce? so I looked back at a handful of lincolns from previous trips acquired as loose change. Found a 1970S, is this rarer than a "D" I see on the others?

Thanks

According to the RedBook, the mintages were

P- 1,898,315,000
D- 2,891,438,900
S- 2,632,810

There are also small date and large date examples for 1970 S, small date being worth A LOT more than large date. Sorry, I don't know how to tell the difference, although I've seen at least one thread here that covered it.

There is also a doubled die obverse in the RedBook for a 1970 S.

If you could post a picture of it, I'm sure someone could tell you if it's a samall/large date. If large date, the RedBook values it (in unc. condition) at 35 cents, but for small date, $65

There are two different 1970S Lincolns- the proof(mintage 2.6 million) and the business strike with a mintage of 690.5 million so it is definitely not scarce but it is also not common in current circulation(none of the 1968S-1974S business strike Lincolns could be considered common in circulation any more). Both the proof and business strike have a small date variety and both have a significant premium and those are certainly considered to be quite scarce. For diagnostics of the 1970S small date, look here.

biokemist spelled it out....the 1970S (and 68S to 74S) are rare in circulation because they were widely hoarded.
