I was just a baby in the late 70's. I was curious how much if at all the Ikes and Kennedy's were in circulation through the 70's? Were they commonly used?

I have never received an Eisenhower dollar in circulation. I used to get Half Dollars in change somewhat often up to the late 1980's, although nowhere near as common as Quarters.

Yep. I was young but I fully remember using them as a kid.
Susan Bs and red seal notes too. Obviously not as common on the red notes but they were around in large numbers at least in my exp.
Grew up in Northern California mostly.

I saw half dollars regularly until around 1981 when they became quite seldom used. Ikes were about the same. If you received two quarters in change a couple hundred times then you'd get a half dollar once in their heyday of 1976. Ikes were a little less common.
Of course, before 1965 half dollars circulated nearly as well as quarters. You'd get about eight quarters to each half dollar. They were done in by inflation which not only drove the silver out of circulation but raised prices in the vending machines which didn't take half dollars. Having the '64 issue hoarded by the public didn't help and the mint made little attempt to replace all the silver half dollars with 40% clad and instead concentrated their efforts on making quarters and dimes.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

On the east coast as a kid in the late 70's I would get a Kennedy in change every few months, Ike's and SBAs basically never (although I did one get 3 SBA's in change instead of quarters- what a terrible design).

Ike dollars were used extensively in dollar slots at the Nevada casinos until they went coinless or to tokens. I would get bucket loads of them when I hit a jackpot (not often ). Kennedys were always in the cash drawers, but usually they were not given in change unless the customer asked for them. I worked in a department store from 70-75 and remember lots of them. Most folks didn't know the 65-70 coins were 40% silver ... most of the general public still doesn't.

Here in eastern N.C., I would get Halves on a regular basis in the 70's. Rarely saw an Ike though. Starting to get them at the banks now. Picked up three last week

For me, I would see Kennedys on ocassion, but hardly every an IKE. Living near NYC, I saw SBAs due to the PATH train between NYC and Jersey.

Someone above made a quick reference to vending machines. When Soda Pop and/or candy got to 25 cents, the quarter became king. It was preferable to carry around 2 quarters than a half dollar that wouldn't work in the machines. Not overnight, but slowly and surely.
Ikes really didn't circulate much at all.

This is an interesting topic I've wondered about for some time. I've also wondered what it would be like to search rolls or boxes of half dollars in the 1960's or 1970's. Silver must have been pretty plentiful back then and it would be rare to get a box without at least one silver. Wish it were like that now, but 'the hunt' would not be as fun if they were so readily available.
