What is the value, or range of values, for an 1865 Quarter Eagle having a 1/16 in. hole drilled at the top (below the rim), apparently for prior use on a necklace. This coin would otherwise grade VG-8.

basically all numismatic value has been lost due to it being holed and an ex-jewelery. Since it is gold. it still retains that value. Quarter Eagles have .12094 oz. of pure gold in them. with spot price at $937.00 (friday's closing price) I would say it is worth about $113.32 at melt.

OH, didn't realize it has a mintage of 1,520!
Since it has a hole and is damaged I would say it would bring well below market value of a problem free VG-8. You might could get G-4 money for it since it is a series key with extremely low mintage.

What a shame that it was holed.

If it is a genuine 1865 1/4 Eagle then it's still valuable even with the hole. Make sure it is not an "S" mint coin. Since it was holed and used for jewelry, there's a chance the "S" has been removed/obscured.

I picture would be worth a thousand words!

Yeah,
That's a shame. This happens when there is a love for the gold and jewelry, but not numismatics. It's ignorance on the part of the jeweler.
