Why is it that PCGS gives out less perfect 70 grades? Is it just because they don't grade as many modern coins as NGC or are they actually harder on moderns than NGC? Moved to TPG section -GO

They grade more and their standards are much higher. It's possible to get a higher crossgrade but don't forget that it's several people grading the coin and not just one

They grade more moderns than NGC? I've always thought they graded less.

I don't think their standards are any higher, I think its more of a marketing plow to keep their populations down to create a higher demand for their 70's over the other companies to make their prices higher. If a seller can choose to go with PCGS or NGC and PCGS 70's are selling for more money who do you think that seller would rather have his 70's graded by? Lets face it its the people who get the coins slabbed who is paying PCGS so they give out just enough 70's to make their customers happy and to create a supply/demand for them because there aren't as many in their population reports as there are of other TPG's

not for 70's, their populations on 70's are much lower than NGC and ANACS. Have I ever seen a NGC or ANACS 70 that I thought should have been a 69 or less, Yes I have. Have I ever seen a 70 in PCGS that I felt the same way about, Of course. Everyone makes mistakes. If you want my opinion on the toughest grading in the industry right now, that would be ANACS. I have personally seen ms coins in PCGS slabs come back AU from ANACS in the past year and a half

Well, I'm not joined to either NGC or PCGS right now.
So, who do YOU think I should join for modern coins?

You shouldn't join either.
If a coin can be sent in and come back as a 70 then it must be in some sort of SAFE holder to start with. I heard a dealer say once that the only place that a 70 can can exist is in a slab. Plus there is not much point. Most will come back as a 69 which is insignificant and modern coins are not special enough to get authenticated. Plus why spend the $25 to get it slabbed because there is almost no premium for slabbed moderns. I personaly think that coins should be slabbed if grade makes a BIG difference in price, authentication, and safety (such as toned coins).
I dont want to sound mean or anything. Just the way I see it and dont want people wasting their money.
Thanks.

Napoleon31ft: I agree with much of your post but the the quote below is incorrect. Quote: Plus why spend the $25 to get it slabbed because there is almost no premium for slabbed moderns. Many numismatists don't like it, and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me either, but the market does pay a significant premium for moderns slabbed by major TPG as 70s. My brother-in-law collects modern, slabbed, proof 70s exclusively and pays a major premium to get them. He's not alone. I don't try to dissuade him because that's what he likes and can afford them but I think it's nuts.

well I think I worded it wrong.
anything under a 70 has almost no premium or none that I know about.
I am guilty of owning a 70 1/10 gold eagle that I paid more for. But the amount of moeny to send in 20 coins to get one back as a 70 seems to out weigh the end. I mean isn't the definition perfect under 50x zoom. where as 69 is only 10x zoom.
70s are nice but it takes more money to get one than you will make I think.

yeah a 69 may as well still be in the OGP no matter who its graded by. I have actually seen OGP coins bring more than one graded 69 (maybe the buyer thought it had a shot at 70 and paid more than for a coin they knew was only a 69)

I think people will pay more also because it still has the box and papers with it. A slab is a slab (no box or papers)
