Ok, so I saw this Morgen at a local yardsale for 50 cents...I had to snag it. But it's weird, man.

First off, it's in the acryllic hockey puck, which is annoying. It can't be removed...completely encased.

It's an 1883. Here's the problem side...

I-Can't-Tell...is-This-A-Letter?--Weird-Morgen

What letter is that pretending to be, and why does it look this way? Has it been cleaned a bit too harshly? Is it a fake?

And what's the deal with the darn plastic?

Thanks,
-Jeff

Seems to be a fake if you ask me, no matter what grade itll be over 10 dollars, and if you could fix up the pix.

Hi fuzzbeaner

Welcome to the forum !!

These were done as a novelty, and I think the coin is genuine albeit ruined by being encased in the acrylic.

If your talking about the mint mark at the bottom center,, the pic is a bit hard to make out exactly what it is.

As for cleaned ,, no doubt its been cleaned .

.50 cents is a good price , now just figure out how to get the coin outta there, even just bullion value is well above what you paid !!

There's a lot of these encased-in-plastic coin paperweights kicking around. I've got several (but none with Morgans) with cents, nickels, dimes, and quarters. I have absolutely no idea what to do with them. I tried selling one or two on ebay several years ago, but no takers. It may have been spiffed up a little before being cast in plastic, but it's impossible to tell from the image. The mint mark might be "S", but it's also possible it's an "O". Even before it was encased, it didn't have a lot of value, presuming it's an AU as it appears it might be. Still, for 50 cents, you can't go wrong. As Rick said, it's still worth its weight in melt, but it would take a lot of work to crack it out of the plastic to the degree that it could be sold for melt. I doubt it's a fake.

Highest and best use: paperweight.

Welcome to our CC family!

I think the mint mark is an S and I agree that it is a genuine coin. I know that there are people who have been successful in removing coins from acrylic, but I don't know how it can be done without damaging the coin.

Heres a thought,Acetone melts plastic fairly quickly and it won't affect the coin. You might try soaking it in 99% pure acetone for a couple days.

I would use 100% acatone if I was going to use that, the other ingrediatts in it may harm the coin if its not 100% acatone. anyway about the mint mark I agree it looks like a "S" to me as well and dont really see anything wrong with the mint mark. I also think it is a genuine coin I have seen them in blocks of clear plastic and round Hockey puck style and I think they were just made to sit on a desk as a conversation peice, my uncle has a block with 6 morgans in it (one on each side) and when I was young I used to think of how I could get them out to spend them for candy but never figured out how to do it and he still has it. Anyway I dont think it is possible to remove it from that kind of stuff without harming the coin, I could be wrong but if you find a way I would love to have the CC's out of my uncles block because I know they have been uncirculated for about 100 years because it was my great grandfathers before he gave it to my uncle. But its still a great conversation peice, and the one I am talking about has alot of family value even if they are encased in the plastic forever

Brian1315, I had a laugh imagining a child being so near to those coins and yet so far from the candy.

I think Plastic has only been around for 50 years or so, If the block is around 100 years old, it might be made of glass?

if its glass then its some hard stuff so maybe its not as old as I thought, I was just thinking since it came from my great grandfather it would have to be a little older than that but he didnt die until 1974 so it could go in that time frame. if it was glass with all the stuff I tried to do to it, it would have atleast chipped. Them coins sure are purdy things though I remember looking at that thing for hours trying to figure out how to get them things out of there. I would have felt like the richest kid in the world if I had ever acheived that, would sit and think about buying my family a house and all that with the money (kids think you can buy a house with 5 dollars, or atleast thats the mentallity I had back then)
