Quote: What do you think of the 2008 Mint Set as an investment?
I wouldn't think the 2008 Mint Set would appreciate much if at all in the near term. Hot tip for you though acramos1: Later this year the U.S. Mint will be selling the 2009 Lincoln Coin & Chronicles Set at $55.95. There is a limit of 50,000 sets total. It includes the 2009 silver Lincoln dollar and all 4 cents. Limit one per household. These should have great "after-market" value. I'd guess $200 easy.

I have two final questions for you. (I promise)
Do you have a lot better chance finding MS-67 to MS-69 coins in U.S. Mint Sets?
Is it true that you have a better chance of getting a PF70 grade from PCGS by sending in a raw coin rather than an NGC coin already graded PF70? (and no, I'm not trying to get rich)

thanks guys you are making my argument I have had with other people about modern proofs and modern bullion either getting a 68-70 in PR or MS sound very valid. I think the pop numbers at NGC and PCGS really do not reflect the true value of the coin if all or even 1/3 of the moderns mintages (from proof sets or uncirculated sets) were graded. You would have a huge amount of 70's so the value based on pop would drop. So buying a slabbed coin is really not the way to go on moderns. Just buy mint packaging with the coin saves money and still looks cool too!

One last post then it's off to bed. 1. Yes - You have have a better chance of finding a MS67 in a Mint Set. Forget the MS68 or 69 thing - not gonna happen. Anything re-rolled or from circulation would probably grade 65 or less. 2. PCGS is handing out some PF70s these days. My thinking would be if NGC already graded it PF70, then it's better than anything you're likely to find raw.

Thanks for the tip on the 2009 Lincoln Coin & Chronicles Set bherring1964.
And I have a question. Should I pre-order, subscribe I guess, or do you think they will still be available at the time of release?
Yup, I've never ordered from the mint. I presume I can set up an account with them. I've been meaning to, but my budget never seems to stretch much past CCF deals. Which, by the way, have always been a Bo Derek 10!

Okay bherring1964, so about how many 1999 mint sets do you think I would have to buy to get a MS-67 or MS-68 State Quarter example?

Remember these are just guesses acramos1. Most quarter out of a 1999 Mint Set will grade 65 or 66. If you bought 100 sets you could probably find a 67 in there somewhere. Forget about ever getting a 68. The odds are too low.

Bherring1964, now I just have some investment questions for you.
Do you think the 2009 mint state pennies will be worth more than the proof pennies in the future, considering how many proofs are going to be made?
And what do you think about the lincoln commemorative silver dollar?
I personally think it could end up being the most valuable modern commemorative silver dollar just because of who's on the coin and it's not like their going to make a million of them.
