I know it won't seem important to the rest of you folks but I'm pretty happy over it. I just got my first 2005 Buffalo nickel out of circulation, a 2005 P. That bring my count of post 2002 nickels up to 15 pieces so far. So I'm averaging just over 2 pieces per year.

Ahhh..so I'm not alone in keeping these , I dont know how many I have , not many , they seem the hardest to find of the westward series.

I think it is interesting that you guys are looking in change and not finding any. Of the Westward Series, this one easily is the best reverse design, in my opinion. I also think that the general public are probably putting them aside because they might consider them a modern "Buffalo" nickel, just the same as anyone finding one of the actual Buffalo nickels when I was a kid ( long ago ) would put them aside. Come to think of it, I don't see very many myself in change. I did buy several Dunbar and Street and Sons rolls of the P and D and have them stashed away, but I don't think they are any great investment. In those rolls I have though, there has to be the best top 10 or so of what they contain, which I hope I have a few MS67 or better to preserve when the day comes to peel them open. That obverse is very prone to focal point scratches and dings. I feel it is a poor design and not very attractive, but slightly more acceptable than the 2004 half a face design. Yuk! I wish they would have used the old obverse in 2004 and 2005, and the face forward of Jefferson in the return to Monticello we now have. It would have made more sense as a transitional design.

I think you are right Wheezy , people keep them just because they look cool , kinda like the old Buffalo nickel. Its the only reason I keep them.Buffalo nickels were the first coins I collected so it seemed the thing to do , add some of these to the herd. Its an area where I've done zero research nor taken photos for comment.Im sure one of these days when I get around to that I'm going to be in for a few surprises. Most of them were given to me by an old timer collector, never been out the rolls, same with Mercs. It gets to the point theres so many its impossible to find that kind of time. I know I know..what a nice complaint to have , there it is though.

I still see quite a few and have put them aside in the past. Now I just pull the Denvers. Here in NC, they are harder to find.

I work at Baskin robbins. I can tell you- these are in no way rare or uncommon.

My first reaction to this is "is he kidding?" I have been pulling all the westward journey series nickels out of my rolls and stashing them in an original "westward journey" nickel bag from the mint. I must have $20 or more worth, and hey, a pretty good percentage of those are Buffalo. I even found a "speared buffalo" die crack specimen (woot!)

I dont think the post intimated these coins were rare , uncommen perhaps which would seem true enough in some areas. The number one reason why has been mentioned and confirmed , people tend to keep these bison nickels..is it hoarding..dunno.I do it too , they are too nice to spend when a tatty old jefferson will do.

I think its wild how some specific coins will circulate pretty heavily in one area and almost be unseen in others in cuirculation
