I should probably set this up as a poll, but don't know how and don't have time to figure it out. The three dates I'll put forth are 1964, 1969, or 1970. Please respond with choice and rationale.

I want this to go without my interference (untainted responses), but I guess the question ought to be, regardless of percent, what was the last date for "circulating" US silver?

Trick question ! Silver will always be circulating, I found some on friday. haha.
All 40% Ikes were NIFC right ?

Some informative reading about the 'date freeze' and the last years of the silver business strike coins here.  I've found several silver Roosevelt dimes in change this year, and yes all of the 40% Ike's were 'NIFC'..... (PS: I found a few 40% Ike's in circulation when I was a kid!) Edited by DNA

ive found 2 NIFC silver ikes in circulation. Silver dimes probably are the most commonly seen silver coin in ordinary pocket change.

I think you should have phrased the question differently. "What was the last date for circulating US silver?"
Answer 1) It's still circulating (although in very minute quantities)
Answer 2) The dates on the last circulating silver coins would be 1964 for 90% silver, and 1969 for 40% silver halves (since the 1970 half was NIFC) However all 1964 dated 90% silver coins were still being minted in early 1966.

Okay, you all are perverting my intention, of course we can all still find silver in circulation. What was the last date that is printed on a coin that was intended for circulation, 1964, 1969, or 1970?

I know 1964 and 1969, as confirmed by wd1040, but 1970 is ?, excuse me, why is 1970 mentioned? Thanks!

1969 would be the last dated coin with any silver content and they would be the half dollars. the 1970 half dollars have silver content too but were only issued in mint and proof sets and were not intended to circulate

Okay, I've gotten some answers. I'll admit I was "wanting" one answer over the others, but I'm a scientist by training and waited for the "data". Since I was born in 1970, I really wanted that to be the last date for US circulating silver. I'm putting together a birth year world coin set and was "hoping" to put in the US silver halves without "cheating" on the circulating question.
If you counted all the world coins in 1970, it would be astronomical and unobtainable because of all of the NIFC. Besides, there is something about circulating silver that is more interesting. The year I was born there were still a few places that had circulating silver (Netherlands Antilles, Tunisia, etc), but I was hoping to add the US. Based on the results of this poll, if I add the US halves, then I open the door to a ton of NIFC junk in my birth year set.

I think you oughta search alot of half rolls until you find one. Then I think it would be a legitimate circulated coin.
