So I just started buying on ebay in the last couple of months. I think I got my first item went bad! I won a note at the end of June. This is the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...170346375996 This item shipped on 7-2-09, I still have not received it. What do I do from here? Thanks for your opinions!

It looks like it shipped Canada Other Letter-post which I think is just a surface mail service. Did he give you any tracking info? I cant help but wonder if it's hung up in customs? Good luck...looks like a nice piece so I hope you get it safely.

EDIT: I just checked and the Canadian Post Office says 4 to 6 business days is normal delivery.

I would ask the seller for a tracking number or confirm that it did indeed mail on 7/2 as originally stated. Ultimately it's up to the seller to prove that you received the item, so you should be covered by Paypal if you never get it or the seller doesn't cooperate. But give the seller a chance to make it right before doing anything drastic.

The seller has been great on communication and concern. I did ask him for a tracking number, and it did not come with one. He has concern of me not receiving it already. How long do I have with paypal to file a dispute? Thanks for the reply!

Paypal says 45 days to open a dispute:

If you are unable to arrange a refund and you have not received your item, or the item is significantly not as described, you can open a dispute within 45 days of the payment. Learn how the dispute process works by logging in to your PayPal account and reviewing the step-by-step tutorial.

So you have a little time to wait and see if the item arrives. I would give it until the end of July, as much as that may seem like forever. You probably paid at the end of June, so the end of July puts you at about 30 days, still well within the timeframe to file a claim for not receiving the item. International shipping, even from Canada, can be hit or miss in my experience so hang in there. Keep us posted!

I have dealt with this seller and he lives about a hour away from me (or so) and he was still slow shipping (not terribly slow, but slower than it should have been), so I wouldn't worry if I was you ... I'll bet the item will show up shortly (I don't know the seller personally, just bought an item from him once).

Oh, I sell on ebay too and it seems as though many of my items being shipped are slow to the US for whatever reason (and I get them out right away). Again, I bet it will arrive this week.

I have plenty of patience! It's only $25, I was just making sure I still had time to open a dispute if need be. I'm sure it will show up shortly, and he was very timely on reporting that it had shipped, and checking to see if it showed up yet. Thanks for the input folks!

I live in central Canada, and recently sent an item to California ( ebay sale). The lady at the post office told me to expect 4 to 6 weeks for delivery using ground (which I did). Air mail would have cut only 1 week off the time. My item took just over 4 weeks to arrive safely in California.

If the seller has been open and communicative, then you should give him the chance to make it right before opening a dispute. The dispute process is for when relations between seller and buyer break down, not for an item which never arrives.

True...I should clarify my earlier quote that came directly from Paypal about opening a dispute. A dispute would only need to be opened if the seller does not refund the item and shipping price once it has been determined that the item has never arrived, and probably never will.

So SuperDave is right...in this case, the communication between the seller and buyer has not broken down yet, so no dispute is necessary at this time. Hopefully it doesn't get to the point where it does and a dispute filing is necessary, but that protection is there as a backup in case the seller becomes uncooperative.

It's unfortunate when these things happen. Nobody wins except for maybe the case where someone else gets the item intended for the buyer, and decides to keep it for themselves instead of doing the right thing.

Travel time for items shipped between Canada and the U. S. - either way - is awful. The magazine that I publish routinely shows up in UK mailboxes before Canadian.

I live in the South and have bought quite a few coins from an e-Bay seller in Canada. Usually the coins come as quickly as if shipped from within the US. But every so often a package will take up to six weeks to eight weeks to arrive. I'm patient because this seller has always been above board with me. Don't know what happens in Customs, but the packages don't appear to have been exploded or X-rayed like my brother-in-laws mail at his DC Gov't office.

Since you've have good communications. I would be patient, the package will probably arrive or be returned to the seller. Most of the time the seller has offered a refund. Just some words from my experiences.
