I wasn't sure where to put this thread but here goes.

It was a good day at the shop - at least for the boss.

We had a few collections come in right after one another. I had just finished buying one and in walks another. Nothing major - we paid $600 for the whole set.
Quite a few V nickels and a good smattering of Indian cents. Seemed to be the common dates I'm used to seeing so I make an offer and the guy sells the whole thing.

I started sorting after lunch. First I dug into the Indians. Found a few from the 1880s and 90s but basically your typical lot loaded with 1907s. UNTIL I stumbled on the 1909-S. A solid F12 coin that is already headed to NGC.

Next I started in with the V nickels. Many were in rolls with the dates marked on them. Probably 98% post 1900. Of course I'm checking the 1912s for mintmarks and I found 5 12-D. Then, you guessed it, a nice 1912-S. Headed to NGC as well. I'd put it an VG10.

So the boss is happy. Two coins will pay for the collection basically.

I also bought a few coins and tend to get good prices especially on a day like today. I bought all of the 12-D V nickels. Under rated date IMHO and I'm working on a roll.
Also picked up an 1897-S Barber quarter for my Barber set. The price was right.

Are you at liberty (pun intended) to share your per piece buying prices on bulk IHC's, Buffalo's, V-Nickels and so on? I am curious to see how they compare to coin shops here.

Btw...nice finds! WOW!

i wonder in 50 years from now when the grand kids get my collection if they will cash my 1/2's in for a fraction of what they are really worth

Can't supply pics because they are my bosses coins and were sent to NGC. I found them but HE paid for them.

Yotie,

If you're going to leave coins to family members I always suggest two things.
First is they appreciate them.
Second is they are informed.
THEN if they sell them they will get much better money.

If this guy had walked in with this collection and had the two key coins separated because he'd done some research we would have instantly paid him much more. Both are coins we can easily move .

Instead we bought in bulk. I found these coins because I was breaking them down into piles. Most of the Indians were common date G-VG.
About half the V nickels were culls.

Having been at this a while I ALWAYS check 1912 V nickels and any 1908 or 09 Indians. This was a rare occasion where it really paid off.
