i dont know if I have found a DDR or not. as I am checking through coins, I am finding that most of the DDR, shown (on coppercoins) sight, are so minute that I cannot perceive them on the coins even under an inexpensive microscope. however I was tryning again whih some 1998, and I found one that seemed like a possible. when I w=selected a coin to compare to, I found this one. if it is a DDR I beleve it may be a DDR-005. I really cant tell, and would like others opinions. I do NOT see the die markers described on coppercoins website. I also attempted to edit the photo on photobucket, but could not access their website. if there is some possibility that this is DDR I can try to post a better pick - later. thanks

after looking at it again - this is probably jsut a "funky" coin, that made me believe it may be a DDR.

These minor doubled column doubled dies are plentiful as a category, but the individual dies are somewhat scarce, with fewer than five examples known in many cases. Collecting a complete set of them would be a monumental undertaking, and that's an understatement.

Yours is a doubled die, and it is just strong enough to be listed as collectible with a value in GEM BU of around $5. Unfortunately there is not much demand for them, but at least they are scarce from die to die, and yours is probably just as scarce as any other.

Look at it like collecting old tin type photographs...you can find one in nearly any antique shop, but finding one of a particular person could be nearly impossible. If I were to look through 1998 cents and try to find a doubled die similar to yours, I would be able to find one within a day or two...but finding the exact die you have there would be a very difficult task.

These doubled column doubled dies are nearly impossible to attribute with photos alone. It would take a personal inspection of the coin to tell for sure whether it is die #5 or whether it is something different.

I can tell you it's a doubled die - which one it is would take me seeing it under my scope.
