So I've got some money to spend on my 7070 (no gold). I've got just about enough to get any one of the 12 remaining coins I need.
I'm torn between getting once nice coin, or 3 or 4 of the lesser expensive coins and being that much closer to completion. I've got several very low grade examples in the album now, but at least they are there. Upgrades will come at a later date, no question.
My sensible side is telling me to get one piece that I would not normally be able to afford, but, as is the case in our hobby, there's the idea of being 4 coins closer to a complete set that is so intriguing.
So CCF, what are your opinions, one nice coin or 3 or 4 cheaper coins?

I would go for the one nice coin...but then I always go for quality rather than quantity.

It will be, if I go with the one coin.

I am a sentimental nut that never upgrades because most of my coins have been in my collection for many years now. However, the 7070 is the one album I do intend to upgrade (but I will keep the replaced coins in another album).
I have decided to fill the holes first, then worry about upgrading it later. It might not be the best strategy since I won't be trading or selling the replaced coins, but I really want to see a coin in context of the completed album to know what the upgrades should look like. As I get down to the last few (more difficult coins) I might have to change my procedure.
You said "Upgrades will come at a later date, no question." So, do not limit yourself to one of the choices while you shop. Get the coin or coins that are the best opportunity for you at this time, whether it is one great coin or a couple of coins. I do not think you have much to lose if you plan to sell or trade the replacements.

I always get the best coin I can afford (or find) at that particular time over quantity because if I skimp on the coin it will be stuck in my mind I could have had a better example in that hole and I will end up upgrading all the coins I bought anyway to make them look like they should have looked in the first place

Bryan- I just took a look at the link to your 7070, it is quite a nice set. I just started mine a couple months back, and decided to tackle the gold page first. How long did it take you to get this far with your 7070?

I know it's hard, and I struggle mightily with it, but go with one of the best you can get.

Quote: How long did it take you to get this far with your 7070? it has actually been stagnant for the last 6 months or so and before that I guess I didn't fill anything for about another 6 months. I have actually been working on the album for about 2 years but 1 year of that time it has just sat with nothing being added because money was spent in other areas instead of coins

What 12 coins do you still need? Some of the coins may be tough to find even if you have the money. For example, one of the coins I still need is a 20 cent piece. There's enough of them out there that I can be pretty sure that when I am ready I can find a nice example relatively easily. Contrast that with a Draped Bust Large Cent or a Classic Head Large Cent or a Seated dollar. These are tougher to find (and expensive), so you might get into a case of having the money but can't find the coin. So, depending on what you are looking for, you might want to search for a handful and be ready to pull the trigger when the right coin comes along. I did this recently when I found a Seated dollar w/ Motto that I liked at a good price. I bought it even though I was looking to buy a different coin first. So, I think the answer is that it depends. Start a second one, then a third, etc.

I would suggest getting one good coin rather then several cheaper ones.
How much are you thinking of spending? Knowing that might help with the decision.

i would go with one very nice coin instead of trying to just fill holes, it's more gratifying to me to look at a nice au/bu coin than a bunch of worn coins with little detail
