That people will pay top dollar for NCS certified ugly harshly cleaned junk, but barely pay anything for nicer ICG certified coins...

Yep. Case of buying the slab, not the coin. ICG isn't bad at all, neither is DGS; they just aren't as well recognized. I will say that NCS is often very conservative on their detail grades.

Sometimes, but sometimes not. I often see really UGLY 'XF details' coins that are really no better than XF-40 or VF-35 going for outrageous prices.

Actually, I believe NCS are considered to be THE experts on "problem" coins - it's what they do.

So for expensive, rare coins, NCS might add a premium to a problem coin just be certifying exactly what the extent of the damage is and whether it is authentic. I'm not a counterfeiter - maybe the damage was an attempt to transform a common coin to a more rare example?

Long and short, you don't hear NCS talked about very much, but they are very highly regarded in the coin community.

Yes, I am aware that they are pretty good at what they do. However, it just seems like really awful junk in their slabs sells for too much. Sometimes people will even pay the same price for a whizzed coin as a problem free coin, just because it looks attractive on the surface and is in a NCS slab!
