Has anyone tried to spend an old coin? I mean a coin that isn't worth much more than the face value, just to see what kind of look you get from the cashier.

Its fun. I've been spending hundreds of JFK's and started with the Ikes. Sometimes they call the manager. I try to convince them to save them for the kids so they don't end up back in some bank vault. There are some McD/Subway cashiers that look forward to my coins now and have even bought extras. The barber is getting his fair share too.
I would encourage all half hunters to retain a few "dump rolls" and to spend JKF's and get them circulating.

I was thinking about coins from the 1800's or early 1900's.

Actually, I have just for fun. I purposely spent some nodate Buffalo nickels and wheat cents before. Just to see the look on there faces, and hopefully they will pass on into a child's hand eventually and get them into coin collecting. Unfortunately, the cashier didn't even give them a second look. :-(

I work at a bank so I get Ike dollars, SBA dollars and 2 dollar bills and have a great time spending them at fast food restaurants. I had a wonderful day when the Saq dollars came out...tried to pay with those, no luck, so I pulled out a few Ikes, no luck and then said "oh well" and pulled out the 2 dollar bils. The clerk called the manager and he finally accepted the bills.

I spend $5 silver certs. all the time. They are great because people notice the color change. I spent one and ended up talking to the girl for a couple mins. about coins and where I work (coin store) and she ended up coming it and spending $60 on some coin silver.

So, obviously no matter how old the coin is, it can still be used today. But, how about spending Half Cents, and 2-cent pieces? Of course you would have to have a lot of Half Cents to buy anything in today's world.

actually I dont know what the term is but I belive they were removed from cirulation and no longer legal but.... I may be totally wrong so what you are saying is to pay a bill that was 1.28 you would use an Ike dollar,20 cent peice a Liberty nickel and a 3 cent nickel would that be legal tender?

Last February 12th, I spent common-date 40's/50's Lincoln Wheat Cents in all of my transactions that day, in honor of the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth! I took a day off from work, and I ordered my 2009 Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollars from the Mint's website before I left home. I had a plastic coin tube with 50 Wheaties in my pocket, and I spent 43 of them. (not more than four at a time, as I was making exact change). The cashiers did not seem to 'notice' them, at least in my presence.

Quote: OK, so are coins from the 1800's still legal tender today? They are where I live! in fact I have a small portrait of George Washington I'll sell you for 20 Half Cents, 15 large cents, 5 Two Cent Pieces, 10 Three Cent Silvers, a Bust dime & quarter! Would you like to purchase my portrait of Lincoln also?

Yup, all US made coins are legal tender, and all banknotes printed after 1853, 57, 63 or 67 (can't remember...) are still legal tender.
