I was playing "Fallout 3" on my computer last night and came upon the first instance of coin collecting in a video game I have ever seen. For those not familiar with the game, it takes place in the 23rd century, 200 years after a nuclear war between China and the US which has wiped out most human life. You play as a resident of one of a few subterranean vaults under Washington DC who has been born and raised underground, never having seen the surface. In pursuit of your father who vanishes to the surface, you venture out into the wasteland. While wandering through the Mall, I came upon the Lincoln Memorial guarded by some humans. The leader had gathered up all the Lincoln-related artifacts he could find but sent me on a quest to loot the various museums on the Mall for more. In the Natural History museum, I came upon a "complete" set of Lincoln cents! In the timeframe of the game, the 1909 was almost 400 years old. Granted, we're now using bottle caps as currency and the need to collect should be trumped by the need to not get mauled by a mutant but I'm not giving the pennies to that guy in the Memorial. He can take the Lincoln Bobblehead and copy of the Gettysburg Address instead.

That Mario's quite the coin collector, but they all seem to be the exact same gold coins. They're sitting around everywhere. My kids don't even stop to pick them all up sometimes!
