Collect what you like is the old axiom repeated time after time in this hobby. What do you do if you like too many different series? Lincoln cents were my lead-in drug to this hobby about 20 years ago. Then I noticed how nice some other series were and decided to go for a type set. Then I came across a good deal on a majority of the Liberty "V" nickels, so I bought an album and decided to complete the series. As I worked on my type set, I realized how beautiful Mercury dimes were and decided to complete that set. I also got a chance to cherry pick VG & F+ Barber dimes for $1.00 each and was able to get nearly a third of the set.... so I bought an album. I figured how expensive can a Jefferson nickel set be... so I bought an album. At this point I have several albums that are at various states of completion. I guess I'm interested in other people's collecting stories/patterns and how they were able to focus their collections. Thanks, RKP  Edited by rkp

Focus? Focus is what you do with your eyes to avoid walking into doors. It has nothing to do with collecting coins.  |

I have made a solemn promise to myself to finish my 7070 (14 slots) before I move on to other things. Well, for the most part I remained focused, except for the occasional stray into Lincolns, mint issues, random stuff offered here...... OK, not completely focused, but I'm making progress and having fun too. That's the important part.

This kind of focus is detrimental to the joy of collecting. Too many good coins out there that would be passed upon because "I have declared 10 years ago that I would only collect Polish coins". Later I'd regret not buying it.. and even more when I'd remember that I haven't bought it for such a dumb reason.

My collection is incredibly unfocused. I have everything in my collection. U.S. coins, world coins, complete sets, incomplete sets, type sets, U.S. currency, world currency, exonumia, buillion rounds..... I just collect whatever is attractive to me.

I was doing so good on my 7070 and then BUST HALVES. I got a book on overton varieties and they are absolutely amazing. Also have my Barber dime book going. |

I am ALL OVER THE PLACE with my "focus" ......... I DO have the focus of a U.S. Navy Seal with a mission to complete..... but it only lasts until I see the next "shiny object" then I start salivating and point my focus that way.........then the other way......... One could "technically" have "focus" for 9 seconds.......or 11 years..... on a coin or series......but what's your definition of "focus" ! ....... Edited by eaglefoot

I have the perfect coin focus: I only collect what I like.
So far, that's about every coin. Boy howdy, am I having fun or what!?

I'm doing pretty good, I only focus on the album I have opened. However, I open a different album about every hour!

Maybe the best way to put it is multi-focused. Anyway it sounds better than scattered. I love coins and cannot stick to one compartment. One of the more enjoyable endeavors was a set of coins of the 20th century. It's like organized chaos. Two of my sons and I each did this because it can be done on any budget. When you get the set, you can then continue to upgrade and still not be limited to one type. (Whatever my favorite is for that day.)

Sounds like we all have the same basic "problem". I was focused on completing my Jefferson's when I got back into collecting a couple of years ago. It didn't take long to move to Buffalo and Liberty nickles. Then it was easy to move to the Lincolns and then to Indian Heads. As it stands now; my focus is on all of these
plus, keeping the proof sets current and whatever mint offers look good. The only completed project is the Jefferson's. Very nice, hi-grade, set. Hard to tell how focused I will stay on the others. I very much enjoy the time and effort I put into the hobby.

This is an interesting subject. I have tried to stick with a few different coin series but I always end up with others as well for various reasons.

I've decided I definitely don't have enough focus that I would want to/be able to put together a complete set of one type of coin. So for the time being I'm trying to focus on my US type set, only problem is trying to resist the urge to work on type sets from other countries too.
