I have discovered the 1877 and a 1909S Indian Head cent. They are from a reputable collector and the coins look to be Good to VG. The Liberty is clear. He wants $400 a piece for them. Is this a good deal - how do I know? I will have them certified if there are doubts. Please advise. I'm new to this forum and hope that I did not miss another discussion on these.

Thanks!

sounds like a pretty good deal to me if they are as nice as you are stating, the 1877 alone in VG condition could pay for both coins in my opinion. Thhsi is not my collector preference or anything so others will chime in and tell you their opinions I am sure that have more knowledge in the cents field, but I also want to welcome you to the forum and hope you enjoy your stay with us and hope you share some pictures of these coins if you decide to buy them.

The two coins would probably run around %900 to a $1000 from a reputable dealer. Four hundred a piece is a great deal but I would still suggest you have them authenticated and graded to protect yourself and the task would already be done in the event you decide to sell some day. These are definitely key dates and authentification is a MUST! Good luck on a great find!

Thanks Bryan for the welcome and definitely for your thoughts on the coins. I too think it's a good deal. The coins still have some Red in them but, mostly brown. The Indians are clear including the headdress. I was quite impressed and am anxious to put them into my collection.

I am taking my Mothers collection(s) of the past 75 years or so and combining it with mine. Although she parted with a lot of silver in 79/80 (smart move) she kept a great deal of the collection. I have spent 3 weeks organizing them into 2x2's and folders. I have a long way to go to complete them. She kept the pennies in paper folders but, most of her coins are loose and in nice condition. I think that I need stronger than my bifocals and the 5X though! I'm hoping that her keen eyesight missed something along the way! She passed in June of last year but, she left copious notes that her collection belonged to me. She had thought about that for years as one of her notes was dated 1958! I was only 4 years old. Futuristic thinker my Mom!

Her oldest US coin that I have found so far is an 1869 Shield nickel in not bad shape. She left me many Morgans and a few Peace dollars so I'm watching the Morgan and Peace forums also. Quite informative.

This is such a wonderful hobby and investment. I'm even playing in gold, ofcourse buying high. Too bad I didn't dive into gold a few years ago. Oh well, it's still a good investment and enjoyable hobby.

I'm looking forward to continuing with the forums. Thanks again!

Also, watch out for cleaning; if the coins have been cleaned, they are worth considerably less. When you mentioned that the coins are G/VG, and then mentioned that there is some red in them, it made me wonder about cleaning. No G/VG coin would naturally retain any red. If you have them certified, this will become clear. Some certification agencies don't grade cleaned coins, but perhaps they would return them with an idea of whether they are authentic or not. Someone who is more experienced with the certification agencies could probably say more about this.

Good luck, and I hope they turn out to be a good deal.

ANACS authenticates and slabs cleaned coins, they just have a marker on the slab that states the coin was cleaned and they give it a net grade. So you would have a properly graded coin by a reputable TPG company and have it not come back in a body bag even if it were cleaned

Thank you for the hints/suggestions on "cleaning". That didn't cross my mind (oh duh). I'm going to take another hard look at these coins this week. I priced a couple over the weekend and now I'm wondering. I have bought/traded many coins with this collector and have been totally satisfied. However, caution is in the wind with this investment. Thanks again!

I revisited both coins today. The 1909S was actually the better of the two coins. He had it graded Fine, which it was. The 1877 just wasn't the quality that I wanted. If it were - it would have been more $ yes. So I passed on both coins however, I picked up a very lovely 1859 Indian Head (AU) for 06 Red Book $. I'll keep trying on the 1877. Another gentleman was "dropping off" an 1877 in a little better condition but the price was $750. A tad steep for me right now. I'm very happy with the 1859. Thanks for all of your help and guidance it certainly came in handy for my final decision. If anyone is interested in these coins you may e-mail me.

An XF S VDB, I would say $850-900. Retail Pricing would be higher.
