Was this popular at one time,a fad of it's time,to
make jewelry with coins?I have 2 necklaces with
1935 winged head liberty dimes in them.the inner
part around the head has been cut out.I also have
a moneyclip with a 1972 Kennedy half dollar,and as
I have mentioned before,my Morgan dollar used to be
in a belt buckle. Are these coins really history now?
thanks.sn31

Hi sn31

Im afraid that most coins devalue from being placed in jewelry,,(including gold coins) any value that the common Mercs have is now in the value of silver, and the 72 Kennedy ,, I'm surprised that this was used to start with, but its probly still worth .50.

I think the 1972 Kennedy is still okay,as it only sits in the money clip and is thankfully not
welded in.Are Susan B Anthonys worth keeping for
collecting,I haven't heard much about them,I just
have one a 1979.thanks.sn31

Hi sn31

SBA dollars are collectable in the very high grades, If the coin has circulated , its worth face value.

The SBA series even though I do not like the coin ,has the potential to see a sharp increase in price of the very high grade coins MS-65 and above ,, and the proofs are already not doing to badly !!

This coin will probly become obsolete next year with the new Presidential dollar coin going into production.

I have put a few away just in case !!

Rick
Rest in Peace

Coins turned into jewelry have been around as long as coins have been around! There have been periods where there was a rise in the popularity of doing so throughout history(usually in more prosperous times). Many people had coins mounted to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, historic dates or just because of the beauty of the coin.

It is still being done today on belt buckles, rings, necklaces etc.. for pretty much the same reasons. Sadly, this habit generally ruins the coins numismatic value. There is still the intrinsic metal value and very old or rare coins will still carry a value above face or melt. Mike

I thunk the SBA's will go up in value as time goes on as was said in UNC condition. It was a coin that was unliked from the start and everyone overlooked them as a mumismatic peice until recently. They are gathering alot of attention from people that are getting a little older now and remember these coins from childhood but didnt get very menay of them, and when they did it went for candy. I have rolls and rolls of SBA's that was given to me by my grandfather each Christmas and birthday, omne of which is on its way to Terry for the 1000 member contest, so if you get up to 20 posts you can join in on that contest and maybe you will have a instant collection of all kinds of coins including a UNC roll of SBA's

My Mom is a QVC, HSN addict. They sell a lot of "coin jewlery. My mother doesn't understand that the coins value is compromised when they do this and has repeatedly tried to buy me some of these peices because she knows I like to collect. The hype they give these peices make it seem as though they are MORE valuable as a peice of jewlery.
