I purchased this raw on ebay a couple of years ago as an XF-40. I feel the seller undergraded it by a bit. I do believe it has an old cleaning, but has nicely retoned and still has some luster remaining in the protected areas. What grade say ye? And approximate value?

I'm going to say EF-45 with a weak strike of the motto on the reverse.

I'd be inclined to say AU50 and ditto the weak strike reverse.

I feel the seller undergraded it by a good 10 points. The weak motto is a notorious and common feature; I've seen Mint State examples where URI was unreadable. This one was a fun attribution; I'm thinking O-113 or O-114. They are very similar.

Things to look for: Both varieties had a miscut "E" in the motto - the original was eradicated and the new one cut to the left. You should be able to see traces of the old E in the space between E and PLURIBUS. That would narrow it down to O-113 and 114.

O-114 has a center dot between the third and fourth crossbar from the bottom, on the shield, while O-113 lacks this feature. Also check for recutting on Star 13 (closest to the 4), characteristic of O-113.

Value is tough to estimate. In a nice AU50 slab, it's a $200+ coin.

Nice looking coin. EF45 would be my guess, though the obverse could easily be an AU53. The strikes on these reverses are always something to take into consideration.

Very interesting superdave! I had not noticed this before. I do see traces of an old "E" in the location you pointed out.

As far as the weakness on the reverse is concerned; I do not believe this is a weak strike issue. I believe it is an issue with metal flow into the lettering.

thanks for the comments!
