Me and a buddy of mine were at the local coin shop yesterday. My buddy has a few coins he wants to get certified. I have a couple I might consider getting certified as well. We were asking the guy at the coin shop how much he would charge to send the coins in for us since he was getting ready to send some coins to PCGS and NGC. He told us $40 per coin.

My buddy was looking at sending in a few Morgans and I was looking at possibly sending in The type 1 Franklin and possibly a couple of other modern coins.

With that being said, it seems to me that this price seems a little steep. I can't say from experience because I have never had any coins graded before.

Would just like to know if this sounds right or not.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Just for clarification...Is that $40 total or on top of the PCGS fee?

I believe he said that was total for each coin PCGS or NGC.

PCGS charges $30/coin for the Regular Submission Service with a turn around time of 15 days and a max value of $3000. They also have an Economy Submission Service with a turn around time of 20-30 days(or more) and a cost of $18 with a max value of $300 and no gold. Additionally, you have an $8 handling fee per submission and registered/insured shipping both ways. As you can see, $40 per coin is not out of line but PCGS is also the most expensive TPG to submit coins.

Join the PCGS Collectors club. Cheaper and you don't have to go through a PCGS authorized dealer. Direct submissions.

I was wondering about that. Figured it might be a good idea to Join either PCGS or NGC and just submit the coins directly. I believe I seen on NGC's website that they have a modern special for coins 1955 and later for $12.50 a coin. That might be the route I go.

Thanks Again for the input.

From what you said it sounds like you really don't want to start sending in a lot of coins for grading. To join something or just sending in a few coins may not be worth the problems and or your time. For the $40/coin if I were you and had no plans for numerous submissions, that would be the easy way. Another thing is the value of your coins. Way to many people spend $30 and up for grading a coin that has a value of $5. I've already seen those new Lincoln Cents in slabs graded as MS-64 or even less. A coin from change worth $0.01 to have slabbed and greaded for a large sum is sort of nuts.

I agree that sending in newer stuff is useless and a waste of money. I was more interested in sending in my 1956 Type 1 Franklin Proof and the 1960 Small Date Lincoln Proof.

Also the friend of mine is wanting to send in some Morgan silver dollars. I figure even with the membership fee to either NGC or ANA, I'll still come out cheaper than the $40 per coin the dealer wants.

Plus once the initial membership is paid for, for the rest of the year it would only be submission fees.

Maybe I'm looking at it wrong, but thats my take on it.

Thanks for the reply.

My dealer charges me $25 for NGC, flat fee. This is MUCH cheaper than submitting myself! Once you factor in grading fee, return postage fee and shipping/insurace to NGC....this is quite a great deal. Plus, he's only 5 minutes from me. All I have to do is drive there, give it to him, then pick it up when he gets it back....very simple.

EDIT - I should add....my dealer considers me a good customer. I've bought a lot of coins from him over the past couple of years.
