I realize this is a question that doesn't really have an answer, it's more of a preference thing, but I was curious how others thought about it... when picking coins for your type sets do you normally just go for the best example you can find regardless of date/mintage etc?

Say for example the Walking Liberty halves, the later dates with higher mintages you could get a much cheaper high MS coin like a 1943, would you take that over a lower MS or even circulated coin that was more rare or be happiest with the highest grade you could get your hands on.

As you say about preference, I believe there are many answers for this question. In my opinion, the neat part of type sets is what you like. I have gone for significant dates to me. (family members birth year, anniversaries, etc.) Another strategy must be that of budget. I like the best that I can afford at that time.

I have been going for upper grade, common coins for my 7070. The 7070 can be expensive to complete as it is, so I try to be economical while maintaining eye appeal.

I usually go for the highest grade available regardless of date/mint mark also.

I usually go for the highest grade available that I can afford no matter what date or mint mark. If I can find a rare coin that I can afford for a price I can afford that is just an extra plus but I always have a minimum grade I will accept and always has to be problem free or atleast looks like its problem free to me and if I am unsure I try to get a second opinion

I am looking for sharp detail(VF-AU) to appreciate the designs but without
breaking the bank!

For the album, I like the better looking coins, however I'd purchase the rarer coin if I had the money and it came up first, and give it a slab to live out the rest of it's days in.

I would buy the best coin I could afford. If you just start out with a G-VG or up to fine 7070 you may complete it and feel like you would like it much better in VF-XF then you will want to upgrade nearly every coin.

I buy the highest grade I can afford in a series. I have set a minimum grade of VF but so far my collection has not dipped below VF-30. I understand some issues such as the Draped Bust & Classic Head Large Cents are expensive in VF-XF so I may sacrifice with grade and go as low as fine if I have to.

If you buy the best you can afford it will cost you less in the future in upgrades.
