Why would a ebay seller not use USPS Priority Flat Rate? For example, shipping would be $5.00 on the first item then perhaps for each extra auction won add an additional $3.00 and lets say you won 5 additional auctions from the same seller. Why not just use the flat rate service for $8.10 instead of the $5.00+$3.00x5=$20.00 for shipping? Is this just a simple case of trying to profit from shipping?

Maybe, maybe not.

They may not be aware of flat rate boxes. The USPS did not advertise or promote them much. I found out about them on a forum that is 99% eBayers, I never saw anything promotional from the USPS.

I would even suspect that even regular priority mail would be cheaper than the scenerio I made an example of.

This could be a case of "profit from shipping". But as Bobby mentioned, the flat rate service is not one that is widely used or known about. I've been stung with high shipping charges (see post in "do you know an idiot") and usually message a seller prior to bidding asking if they would ship using the USPS flat rate.

When dealing with forgeries - the postal overcharges get even worse. Quite often the sellers offer money back no questions asked. And they actually will do it. However, they refund the bid ONLY - without refunding postage. That way the total cost to them is actually covered by the postage charge. Thend result is that if you chose to return the coin (at your cost)because it is fake they can give the bid amount back - pay for the original coin and then re-sell it. The buyer ends up being out postage costs both ways. But since the seller offers you your money back - ebay is happy and sees nothing at all wrong with the transaction.

I have an auction once in a while, not as much as I'd like now because I am running out of things to sell. Anyways do you think it's appropriate to increase S&H charges to help cover your fuel costs? I mean everywhere is reaising their prices to compensate for high fuel costs, even the postal service is toying with the idea!

nds76:
Depends on how far you are from the post office I guess. I live over 15 miles from the nearest one. However, I have to commute that distance every day and my office is across the street from a postal outlet. I typically don't put a fuel surcharge on shipping, only because I can pop across the street on my lunch and drop it in the mail. If I couldn't do this, and had to drive the 15 miles to the post office, I would put a small surcharge to cover my fuel costs.

Cheers
Mark
