I stumbled upon this auction. $1,000+ for this coin? Are people insane or am I missing something here? I would never pay MS67 prices for a raw coin, especially the one in this auction. Are people bidding this much because the guy implies it might be a MS68 coin? C'mon, how many MS68 Morgans have ever been graded? http://cgi.ebay.com/US-COINS-MORGAN...mZ8412926582 |

Even ignoring the seller's feedback (which is quite scary, I might add), this coin has been polished. To the seller's credit, he does state that at the very end of the description, but there goes any MS grade at all. While it can have uncirculated details, it is no longer in Mint State. Couple this with the fact that 1880 is a common date coin and you have a coin worth about $15. I can't for the life of me figure out why someone paid over $1000 for it unless they looked at it and expect to get a DMPL coin. Unfortunately, they are in for a BIG surprise. Incidentally, I've watched this seller's auctions for some time and would not feel comfortable buying from him. I think they'd have a lot more negatives if they didn't accept returns.  |

This seller reminds me of another "Estate" seller--Remember the Savannah Scammer--Pamsomthing other--& Estatedoctor? The buyer of this coin got suckered in a BIG way-- Susan, not only did this seller say coin is polished (I think s/he cleans them), but farther up on the description, they will not take ANY returns--Over all a terrible deal for daves39696--He gots screwed royally if he sends the doe---  Why do I get this feeling that this seller is a female? |

If you looked at the bid history you will notice that all the bidders were "new". It does take a while to learn to read - EVERY WORD. If you simply read this add it would be painfully clear that you are dealing with a junk coin. But some people don't read and don't look either.
I find it hard to even call this deceptive. Everything they say is likely 100% true. They let the reader leap to conclusions. It may not be totally clear - but who thinks they can buy a $65,000 coin for $1,000?

I hadn't noticed the text added at the end of the auction:
"This coin has been polished. It's still a very nice rare coin !!!"
I thought it looked polished. Sometimes a DMPL coin can look like this though, when shot from a certain angle. I'm sure these bidders thought they were getting a DMPL coin. I feel terrible for the winning bidder. Thats a tough pill to swallow.

What really bothers me about ebay coins (bidders at fault too) is that an auction that advertises MS67, MS68, SUPER FROSTY DEEP CAMEO!! or some such thing tends to get bigger bids, sometimes huge bids. I'm not even talking about SGS or other fake TPGs. These are raw coins. False advertising works! Why wouldn't this guy do what he's doing? He's making a fortune from polished, junk coins. There is no mechanism in place to stop him, so he'll keep doing it. Is it illegal? Should it be illegal? Man, thats a tough question... |

That coin had 17 bids and ended over $1,000. I agree, that's pure insanity.

It makes me sick to my stomach that we can't do anything about thieves like this. I'd get NARU'd if I contacted the buyer, and the seller would just blow me off anyways. Literally hundreds, maybe thousands, of complaints have been made against sellers like this and ebay does nothing. In the meantime, I'm getting annihilated on my own ebay sales because I describe my coins honestly and post excellent pics of them. |

Caveat Emptor! It would have been more honest to list the polishing at the beginning and not the end. This just shows that it pays to read the entire description. When I was a newbie at e-bay I remember getting so excited when I saw something that I wanted that I didn't read the entire description before I placed my bid. It was a learning experience - always read the fine print. So will this drive the price up on an 1880 Morg? Probably not.
