Looks very close to mint state but the darker areas in the fields, especially on the reverse, are possible indicators of friction. Also, the dark residue in some of the letters suggests the coin was once cleaned. The cleaning failed to remove the remaining dark material and left a few faint hairlines. The strike looks solid.

I'd say it has AU-58 detail and might be downgraded to AU-55 value from the possible light cleaning. It's still a very attractive choice for a type set.

It does seem as if this coin has had a cleaning in the distant past. I don't see any wear on the high points of the devices though. A few hairlines and the scratch of Miss Liberty's cheek would probably put this at MS62.

It could easily go AU58 too or might bag for cleaning but this piece does have good eye appeal.

Just some slight wear on the high points. Very nice AU-58 coin.

It is interesting that you guys think it is cleaned. Looking at it in hand I don't see even light cleaning... Maybe I missed something...

Here is the coin.

Would NGC possibly miss cleaning?

I'm very impressed how echizento always seems to get the grading right on!

Well done!

I hope to be as good as you are (eventually) !

(Not that SuperDave, Jaobler, and bherring don't grade terrifically! No offense. I'm just amazed at echizento's right on grades...)

They could have. Look at the contamination around the letters and dentils. Plus there are some light hairlines but the coin appears to have re-toned and still has good luster.

I would say the coin was not improperly cleaned and that may be the difference.

They look like circulation hairlines to me, as they appear scattered, not parallel. Quite common on gold since it is so soft. Correctly graded in my opinion. Nice coin!
