This is a recent acquisition. I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on how to remove the grease spot on the eagle's wing and what look to be reminants from an old dipping. Thanks in advance for your help.

Maybe a wee little bit of e-z-est. I would run it under water and get a cue tip and run that underwater. Then quick dip the swab into the e-z-est. With the water is should be diluted. Then ever so lightly touch it to the spot. Dont rub just touch it. Run everything under water and do it again until you get it off. Then dab it dry with paper towel.

Quote: Maybe a wee little bit of e-z-est. NO!Um, I respectfully disagree. Although the next time I use E-Zest won't be the first, I would strongly discourage it with this coin. This is a very strong MS64, with a very good shot at MS65. That makes its' value at least ~$500 and over $1000 in MS65. You do not dip coins of this value. The residue on the front is most likely not the result of a previous dip, although something obviously dripped on it in the past. The harshest step I could advise with this coin is an acetone dip. If acetone does not get rid of what's on the coin, the only alternative is to offer it to NCS for conservation.

Oh geez no I dont think it should be dipped and if it were my coin I would probably not even touch it. But any time that I do need to clean a coin that is how I do it. Not a dip but it gets diluted and very lightly dripped on almost. Then quickly rinsed off. I practiced a lot on junk coins before I got good enough at it to actually do good.

Thank you for saying that; it's the point I would have tried to make if I'd been awake enough. I apologize if my words were in any way harsh - chalk it up to lack of coffee. E-Zest is an absolute stopper to a numismatist, if it's known that it was used. On the other hand, it is possible to use the stuff undetectably. Either way, in the specific case of this coin I'd lean away from it even diluted. This one's worth decent money, and needs to be done strictly by the numbers.

SuperDave, thanks for the words of warning. Napolean, thank you for your advice as well. Unfortunately I have no experience, and don't think this would be a good practice coin. This coin is a recent acquisition. The first thing I did after I won this coin in auction was sign up withe Collector's Society so that I could submit it to NCS. Unfortunately NCS didn't want to conserve the coin. They didn't let me know before returning it, but their stated reason was that they couldn't improve the grade of the coin, so it was returned to me in the original (MS65) PCGS rattler. (The return was entirely their decision. They did not consult me with an assessment of the coin.) I can only assume that the coin was net graded because of the black mark on the eagle's wing and whatever film is hiding the luster on the front. Not only is the strike beautiful, but there is a total absence of contact marks on any of the important areas on the coin. Without the obvious flaws, I think this coin could be graded as an MS67. Here are some additional pics:

I have never tried this but it just occurred to me that maybe you could spray the grease with a water pick filled with very hot distilled water. I don't believe it would damage the coin. If I am wrong someone discourage my suggestion.

Shame about those marks, because that coin really is a stunner!

If that were mine I would ignore the spot! That's a PCGS first generation holder it's in! History man!

It really is a shame. The pictures I posted don't really do it justice. This coin is cleaner than any MS67 I have seen, and I feel that without the marks on the reverse, it could be due for a nice upgrade.
