I just purchased a Trade dollar...
it has gorgeous detail but lots of hairlines...
does anybody know a way to tone down or remove hairlines
from cleaned coins?

I was thinking of removing the coin from its holder
and letting it tone naturally...any other suggestions?

You could replace the bulbs in your home with 40watt alternatives.

Unfortunatley there is little than can be done. Once scratches it is there. How aggressive were they when cleaning the coin?

Removing them won't be possible since they are really tiny scratches on the surface of the coin. You could buff them out but that would probably look even worse If the hairlines are not horribly obvious, your could give the coin a little toning. I am not talking a full blown AT treatment but something like a multi-month storage in a kraft envelope might help give it something of a golden tone that will mute the hairlines a bit. Maybe throw in some Taco Bell napkins for good measure

Quiznos has brown napkins too - after that Taco Bell thread I was reading, I happened to notice that after getting sandwiches there one day

A few things omitted from your post. For instance is the coin in a sealed plastic slab? Could those lines be on the plastic? On the inside of the plastic? If on the coin, probably not much could be done to remove them and what ever you tried might mess up the rest of the coin.

The only way to remove the lines is to have the adjacent part of the coin be the same depth as the scratch. It'd be the equivalent of buffing the coin down. If it's not worth but then go for it to see how it looks. Otherwise....I'd leave it alone

I think your hairlines are there to stay!

But it's also part of the coin's history! I say let 'em stay!

NCS encapsulated(listed as AU detail with heavy cleaning)Looks AU-58
Moe is right...I'm just going to enjoy the coin and forget about the hairlines.
I was looking for a beautifully detailed Trade$ for under $100 and I have it...
Also I think keeping it in the holder guarantees authenticity if I ever sell it.
Thanks to all for their comments...

PS If I release it from the NCS capsule to display in my type set album, and save the paperwork, will that cause problems for authentication and future sale?

No problems but you will have to resubmit the coin if you decide to sell it and want to attach a TPG assessment to it.

With or without paperwork once the slab is opened the TPG documentation is out the window.

If you take high quality photos of the coin in the slab, that should be a reasonable amount of documentation that the coin was once slabbed and is authentic(also keeping the slab insert with the coin). It is not like we are talking about a multi-thousand dollar key date coin here where you must be absolutely sure, quality photos should provide for 99.9% assurance.
