Something about this caught my eye as I cleared my change purse tonight so I got my magnifier out. I noticed what I thought at first were a lot of scratches but under magnification I saw that most of the "scratches" are actually raised. Like Die Cuds or something like that but tons of them. Is this what over polishing looks like? Or would that be sunken in scratches not raised trails?

Then the lettering in United States stuck out too. Like it was doubled but not plated right? I really don't know so any opinions would be helpful to me.

I had some trouble with the camera so these are just starter pics and I will try to get some better focused ones.

thanks
malissa

Yes, those would be die polishing/abrading lines. The lines would be sunken on the die so that will produce a raised feature on a coin. As for the lettering, the striking of the coin can stretch the plating and cause it to rupture. When that happens, the zinc core is exposed and zinc rot can set in

The heavy Die Polish Lines appear to have been an attempt to erase all evidence of Die Clashing. However, it appears that some Die Clashing still remains between the columns on the Memorial Building!
