They look as if someone used them for clay pigeons. Peppered with buckshot and very little detail. Or did I just get a bad batch? Except for the fields they appear to be imitating the mint sets satin finish. Sending them all back.

That's the VAM 2009.2 clay pigeons variety, very rare!

Both, silver and clad, of my proof set quarters are like that. In my set, the dime, nickel and half look like the traditional strikes.

MorgansRmine,

I too received my silver proof set and was also very unhappy. I returned the set and just tonight, after 16-days was sent an e-mail telling me they received the return, I do hope I do not get some-one else's returned set.
Also put insurance on the set when mailing to them and when you call, about returning the set mention the "poor quality, damaged coins, and they will refund your return shipping costs, Good luck...

I don't think the average person gets out the magnafying glass to even notice. Probably looks just fine with the naked eye.

I have been collecting since 1963, I have among many things a Proof set for every year since 1954, I like many others collect for many reasons, one being I love the hunt for those sharp, strongly struck, possible Proof70 coins.

I would venture I am not alone in that I search the mint set collection I have also every year from 1956 to date for some of the same, very possible MS70 coins, and IMO believe that most collectors look Very closely at their coins and search for the same, sweet Deep Cameo Proof 70 coins and the same for the MS70 "Proof-like coins."
A very large amount of time I spend, like I am sure many others here at the forum also, very closely inspect their coins, isn't that what this hobby is all about,to look and learn at least a large part of it....PS: Most coin collectors are not the average person, being the time and education involved, searching and researching all the Numismatic information we/they can get to have a better understanding of the knowledge and devotion needed to be even close to being up to date with all that is going on.

morgans dad:

I got both the 2009S Silver and Silver Clad Set (7/31/09)

I sent my 09S Silver Clad set back via USPS Priority on 8/3/09 because of scratches on the lincolns,2 real bad gouges on the obverse of the Northern Mariana Quarter etc- Just got shipping notification this morning- they shipped over-night replacement 8/12/09-scheduled to receive sometime today 8/13/09.

I'll post and let you know if this replacement set is ok- if it's also bad, I'm asking for a refund as I'm not going to keep sending this back and forth!

* The SILVER PROOF SET was fine and I kept that one!*

Mine looked the same. I ordered 50 clad and 50 silver sets on the first day they were available. After inspecting my clad, I kept 4 sets and sent the rest back. Of my silver, I kept 4 and sent the rest back. Looks like the Dime and Half Dollar were the most abused followed by the cents. Most of the dime torches had gashs while the shield scuffing and black specs on Kenedy's head were standard for the silver issue.

I don't know- maybe because I had spoken to a rep and complained the day I was returning them! (LOL)

Anyway- the Clad set came today- 3 of the 4 slabs are real nice, however, the Lincolns again have scratches etc , but I'm going to keep it and maybe try to buy another (S) lincoln set at a coin show etc- its getting to be too much of a pain to keep sending these back for exchanging and they are NOT re-imburseing for postage etc.* Already spent $8.00 extra playing the back and forth game!

Nelrak, I think you are on to something, order 40-50 sets and the odds would be in your favor to find 4-5 sets that are SWEET, after all that is all you want, 4-5 sets, Great Idea!!!!I sent mine back and they received it yesterday, now I hope NOT to receive one of the sets people have returned!

So it is safe to say you look at your sets and coins closely!!!
