These are sets that are composed of NGC and PCGS slabs. As you aquire NGC and PCGS slabs you can enter them into a database(on the NGC site), where your coins rake up points.
(Ive only dealt with NGC for this service and I dont know if PCGS does this) I could be totally wrong on this too.

PCGS has one too, you can add photos and compare your set with other sets.

The Idea is to put together the best set of coins all graded my a particular grading company (NGC or PCGS).

Its kind of a way to compete against other coin collectors to see who has the most complete/highest grade sets. Its also used by the grading companys (especially PCGS) as a way of making money. (You cant register your slab on the PCGS registry unless its a PCGS slab). Overall it can be fun if your into it.

For me, the registry added a new wrinkle to collecting. I am just a little competitive by nature so it was a great progression for me. It has also allowed me to meet other collectors and learn more about my series of interest. If you are just collecting certified coins for fun, it is a great way to keep track of your collection and how you stack up. A word of caution, the registry can get expensive to get to the top and to stay there!

I agree, this was my #1 set (now #2) on the registry http://coins.www.collectors-society...eSetID=19238. I sold a few of the coins so it dropped but when I was actually trying to compete to get the best of the best it consumed me. I actually have all the coins to bring it back to #1 again they are just not attributed with the VAM on the slab yet but I don't really want to get back into that part again

My issue with registry sets is that's its all about who has the most money. You can have some rich moron run out and buy a bunch of expensive coins while he knows nothing about them.
