Poll Question
What do you think of the U.S. Mint's practice in recent years of minting business strike coins primarily to fulfill collector demand? I'm talking about the 2001 to present P/D Kennedy half dollars and the 2002 to 2008 P/D Sac Dollars - most having a mintage of 3 million or less per date and mint. For the purposes of this pole, I'm not talking about commemorative issues, proof issues, or mint set coins -- although one could argue that obsolete issues may or may not belong in mint or proof sets either.

What inspired me to post this poll was a spin-off of the issue of keeping or ending the production of Lincoln Cents. When the mint finally gets around to ending production of the One Cent coin for circulation -- will they continue to manufacture the Cent for collectors? If so, for how long?
If the mint is going to be in the business of producing obsolete coins for collectors, then I'd prefer that they go back and reissue some older designs. I could use a nice BU 2010 Flowing Hair 'Chain' cent for my collection.

I think they should, for as long as they continue to mint the Kennedy half dollar. The NIFC coins are sold at a premium, so the mint is making a good profit (above and beyond the normal seigniorage).

I voted none. It's not the mints fault for all the garbage they pump out. The blame lies solely on Congress.

I like the mint coins. I would like to see the mint sell rolls of U/C ASE.

The fact that the Sacagawea has returned to circulation issue for the new ' Native American dollar' version means it's not 'obsolete' anymore! It's a bit like if the Mint had made 1922, 1932 and 1933 Buffalo nickels just for collectors... Quote: russellhome: "I could use a nice BU 2010 Flowing Hair 'Chain' cent for my collection." He's got a very good point there! The Half-Dollar has no real prospect of returning to circulation. We have enough trouble getting 26.4mm Dollar coins to be used in circulation by the public (as long as the $1 note continues to exist!), so does anyone think that the public would actually use 30.6mm Half-Dollars in circulation? Any 30mm+ size coin would have to be $2 or more to truly justify a coin of that size for circulation use.

Looking for impaired proofs and NIFC issues are the main reason why I continue to roll-hunt halves. These coins seem to be overlooked by people who are mainly silver-mining.

I voted "love it" but really, I just appreciate the ability to get bullion coins made from a precious metal, that would be readily recognizable in a time of crisis.
Otherwise, I think they go overboard with all the products they make. But as they seem to be the one place where they make a profit, and it makes collector's happy - keep it up.
I just want some gold and silver!

Can you imagine how sad the proof/mint sets would look with just a nickel, dime, and a dozen quarters with different bus stops on them? Downright depressing.
I do think they need to cut back on the number of NIFS coins, or at least make them better looking. I mean, you've got a commemorative dollar, fine. A commemorative half-dollar (or at least there used to be?), fine. Silver bullion coins, a few different sizes of gold bullion, fine. But another NIFS half, and five more NIFS dollar coins (let's be honest), and a bunch of less attractive gold coins selling at a premium over melt... it's out of hand.
And while I'm thinking of it... Is there anyone here (who ISN'T a WWII history buff) who could find the Northern Mariana Islands on a map on the first try?

I like the ability to buy bullion. I have to buy an eagle or two. That is what got me started. I like pure silver.
