I have a United states proof set 1971 that has "s" on it. When I tried to research it I'm finding the set with pics showing s but calling it no s. I'm a confused newbie. Please explain this to me. Thanks.

first off, welcome to the hobby and the forum!! Since 1968, U.S. proof sets have been manufactured at the San Francisco Mint, and all the coins in the set carry the S mintmark,or at least they should. In 1971, a very small number of proof nickels, estimated to be around 1,666, were struck withount the S mintmark in error. Similar errors ocurred with dimes in 1968, 1970, 1975 and 1983 and with cents in 1990. Any of these no S proof errors are quite rare and valuable.

There were actually two sets of Proof Coins for 1971. I do not know if it was by design or by mistake, but one set had the S mint mark and the other had no S mint mark on the dime and possibly not on the nickel as well. Thats what I have been able to find so far but I will keep looking.

Hope that helps,

Mike

US-Proof-Set-No-
The proof nickel shown is the No S variety. It is missing the mint mark completely. I have been watching these for years.
A PR68 example might cost anyone around 1,000.00 to 1,400.00 these days.
It is my No. 1

Also in 1990 there were a handful of proof sets that didn't have the S mintmark and the set is quite valuable.

Yeah but I think they are dimes with no S mintmarks in the others.

There is a 1982 dime meant for circulation that can be found without a mint mark
The valuable proof dimes found in proof sets that don't have mint marks would be dated 1968 1970 1975 1983
There is a 1990 No S proof cent.
Maybe there is a 1971 no S dime proof?

The full list of error proof sets that may contain a coin missing the S mintmark are:

1968 dime (second rarest no S coin)

1970 dime (estimated mintage 2,200)

1971 nickel (estimated mintage 1,655)

1975 dime (only two sets known. This is the rarest of the no S coins.)

1983 dime (this is the most common of the no S proof coins.)

1990 cent (estimated mintage 3,555 The no S cent can come in either the regular or prestige proof set. Most commonly seen in the Prestige set. Beware of these sets on ebay I have seen a lot of "no S" Prestige sets that have been opened and the proof cent replaced with a business strike Philadelphia coin. The border case on the Prestige holder hides the fact that the inner holder has been opened. For some reason the 1990 no S sets are much scarcer than their estimated mintage implies they should be.)
