I was invited by our local coin dealer to attend the monthly coin meeting held by the coin club in our area.

I must say that although small, only around 10 people there, I had a really good time.

The president of the club was able to obtain several rolls of the "Formative Years LMC. Everyone who was in attendance received a roll of them. This was very cool, one because freebies are always good and two because most of us there had yet to see very many of the newer LMC.

Apparently every month they have a drawing for all the members of the club. Basically from what I understand, people in the club donate items to be given away every month in the drawing. This I thought was very cool as well.

As if the LMC roll wasn't cool enough, they also let 1 guest each month participate in the drawing as well. Well, being the only guest there, yeah, I got another freebie. Ended up with a 1982 Washington Commemorative Half Dollar Proof. This was also cool as I have been wanting one of these.

After the meeting I paid my dues to join. Four dollars for the rest of this year and when renewals come up only $12 a year.

Being able to meet and discuss coins with the members of the club was even better than the freebies. Anytime I can learn something new about my hobby I am more than eager to listen.

All in all I have to say it was very fun. I look forward to next months meeting.

Very cool! I am looking to attend my first coin club meeting, the Tues. after Labor Day, and am very excited, as other than my dealer I know almost no one in the hobby, and I have lots to learn! This forum has been a God send for knowledge, however it will be nice to look some collectors in the eye and face to face!

Glad you had a good time, and scored some cool stuff!

Coin clubs can be a great way to learn more and meet people. I can't remember anyone asking a question and not being able to get at least one good answer at one of our meetings. Kinda like here on the forum. Our club will usually have a brief discussion and go right into the auction. Members are encouraged to bring coins for the auction. As was the case this past Saturday, (small group of about 12)one could usually get the coin(s) for opening bid. That is not always the case. Closer to shows members are trying to build inventories.

After the auction there are always a couple of door prize drawings. My 10 year old son won a 76 proof set this week. (made his night)

It's great to hear that somewhere coin clubs can work out. Unfortunately around where I live the crime rate is such that a coin club just isn't to practical. Allowing anyone to know you collect anything of value, giving out your real name and address just doesn't work around me. Coin clubs are a real great place where you can meet people that may have or know someone that has items you need.

We do have security concerns but presently have a pretty good situation. One of the clubs that I attend meets in a public library and the other in a classroom at a local college. As far as people finding out about real names and where one lives, I guess we have just been lucky so far.

I joined our local coin club last January, and there hasn't been a meeting since that I haven't learned something there. We meet in a church basement in a quiet neighborhood, so security doesn't seem to be a problem. Two meetings ago I was able to hold a '16-D Mercury dime in one hand and a 1909-S VDB cent in the other - the president had brought them for "show-and-tell" - so security amongst us doesn't seem to be a problem, either. What a thrill that was! We have monthly auctions or a bourse, so between this forum and the club meetings, I'm doing nicely in filling in the holes in my collection.
