I have seen their slabs on ebay as well. Don't know much about them. From the ones I have seen, they are in the same boat as SGS. Most of the ones I have seen are overgraded.

Of course this is just my opinion. I stick to PCGS, NGC, Anacs and occasionally ICG.

C4F,

Yes I'm familiar with them. I bought an ebay coin in an NAC holder several years ago. It was graded MS67. I paid AU money for it. When it arrived the coin was horribly whizzed and worth bullion. I didn't lose too much on this discovery purchase.

They are a basement self-slabbing operation. Their intent is to mislead the buyer with the grade prominently displayed at the top of the holder. I couldn't tell the coin was whizzed until I had it in hand. My recommendation would be to avoid any NAC holdered coin unless it sells for melt.

Someone needs to go after chop shops like that place. Can the ANA not purchase a few of their coins then contact the head of their organization and have him/her explain why the coins are not even close to ANA grading standards?

Gothic,

If they were a "real" company, with an address, URL, and business model to succeed in numismatics, yes ANA might try to pressure them. In reality, it's probably one guy (or couple) who purchased bulk quantities of slabs and print labels off their computer. They purchase bulk bags of bullion coins and set about their business. They have no relation to a reputable business like PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, or DGS. Numismatic investigators don't even know where they are located.

The old adage "Buy the coin, not the slab" definitely applies to NAC. If the auction photo is sufficient for you to assess the grade/condition, buy the coin for what it's truly worth. I personally wouldn't purchase another coin in an NAC slab because I've seen literally thousands of them in online auctions ( ebay) and they all have been harshly cleaned.

To those who currently own NAC-graded coins ... my condolences.

It is one of the worst problems for the collector and speculator alike.
However, I was told by a rep from the AG-office in Florida (was going after Centsles) that there is Neither a US Federal Law, nor an individual State law which govern this activity.
The person told me they are aware of these companies but they do not break the law. Was told it is even more difficult to do something about them because they have an unconditional return policy, giving you the opportunity to return the goods for any reason. Was told similar scams operate with comics and other items.
The person said: go lobby the honest graders to involve the LAW MAKERS to come up with a set of rules and laws. Get your congress rep involved.
Was told that, other than using your own judgment to buy the contents and NOT the packaging, there is presently NOTHING that can be done legally.
Maybe THIS forum should set up separate prominent and permanent "DO NOT BUY FROM...." topics or warning lists.

"reputable business like PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, or DGS"

"DGS" is one I have not heard of either.

DGS= Dominion Grading Service

David Lawrence Rare Coins purchased the assets of the now defunct PCI and started a new TPG. These guys are not a boiler room operation, they are quite legit as DLRC has a very good rep in the auction world and they do not want to hurt that rep. They do a couple of interesting things- they have online photo verification for any coin worth more than $100 and the Signature Series variety attribution by series experts(coppercoins is the expert for Lincolns).
