Stopped by the bank today to pick up some nickels ........ and heard a teller counting out some 'heavy sounding' coins. I asked Dee what she had ....... "a man brought all these in but they don't fit in the coin machine" ......... 27 Eisenhower dollars. Anyways ....... I know nothing about Ike's but figured they can't be worth less than $1 each .... so they all came home with me. Ten of these are 1972-P ...... through some Internet research I learned there are three reverse types for this coin with Type 2 being a keeper. Quick look through my new magnifier and all I have are Type 1 and Type 3. No plans at this point to start an Ike collection ...... but I'll set these aside in case that inspiration strikes someday. Does anybody out there know of any other Ike variety things that I should be looking for in these 27 coins? Best David

Someone must have brought them in. My bank(s) have not had any Ikes for me in over a year. Collector's item or not, I like them because a dollar should be heavy.

You did a good thing, rescuing those Eisenhower dollars from the unappreciative bank system! What dates and mints are the other 17 dollars?

Indeed jbuck ....... seems like a shame to pass on them.
A full tally of the 27 Ike's as follows:
1971-P (4 coins) 1972-P (10 coins) 1972-D (4 coins) 1974-D (4 coins) 1976-P (1 coin, bicentennial design) 1976-D (1 coin, bicentennial design) 1977-D (1 coin) 1978-D (2 coins)

The 1976 P & D type 1 reverse are harder to find.

A nice little starter set! Hold on to them for a while, at least the best one of each date-mint. You will eventually feel they urge to complete the set. Trust me. If you do not have a Red Book, here is a good link showing the difference between the Type 1 and Type 2 1976 Eisenhower dollars.

If you ever come across any 1971-D's, the Friendly Eagle variety is worth looking for. Ikegroup.org has a great page on diagnostics for this very intriguing and elusive coin

Our grandkids had some Ike's, given to them as gifts. So, recently, I helped them with an album, and to look for other Ikes. Just recently they completed their set and now share one complete set of Isenhower Dollars.

I like Ike's. If I see a proof for a reasonable price I'll buy it.

Carry them all around in your pockets (hopefully they won't tear out) and people will hear you coming from half mile away with all the clanking and clunking!

I am ambivolent towards the Ikes - alove/hate relation with them... They are a good coin to collect in a book, as they are fairly inexpensive - which I love...
But I hate the quality of the coins (from the mint).
Care needs to be taken to put together a really nice set. I am still working on upgrading my complete set of BU and proofs...
