ANACS graded this Morgan back in 1984 for a now defunct coin shop, and they apparently weren't using the sturdy slabs back then.

If I want to sell this at some point in the future, is the MS65 grade from 1984 trustworthy, and how do people feel about the fact that this coin is not in a real "slab"?

Would getting it reslabbed by NGC be a good idea?

I would not reslab.
That is an old holder and that in itself can add a premium to your coin. If someone is really interested then they should be able to grade it them self. The only thing is if you think it might make a 66. Other wise it wont hurt anything keeping it in that holder.

Oooo, an old ANACS photo certificate, those are collectors items in their own right now. That dates back to the time when the ANA did the certification and slabs were not born yet. IMO, they had a great grading system in that both sides were given independent grades and other qualities of the coin(strike, luster, etc) were judged as well, I think that info should be on the back of the cert. I would not be surprised if that coin still graded as a 65 today but if you were to get it slabbed, make sure you keep the photo cert!

I bought an 1890-CC Morgan that had been ANACS photo-certified in 1986 and received a split grade of MS-60/63. It was in a Capitol Plastics holder which displayed both the coin and the photo cert. I sent the coin to PCGS and they graded it MS-61 which I thought was a bit conservative. Here's the coin, before PCGS slabbed it:

Based on this one experience I'd say the old ANACS grading may be comparable to strict modern grading as performed by PCGS.

I hope you kept the certificate when you sent the dollar to PCGS.

You betcha! There was no "cracking out" involved since the coin and cert were already mounted in the Capitol Plastics holder when I bought it. I just unscrewed the holder, removed the coin, and re-screwed the holder with the cert still in place.

I love the photography on the ANACS certificate. I wish I could take pics like that!
