I have found a rather large number of 43 steelies while searching a "hoard" from a friend.
The problem is they are almost all oxidized- they have a gray film on them. No rust, just the
oxidized surface. Should I pass on them or can they be cleaned somehow.
Many thanks.

You can try a quick dip in Acetone.

No that grainy finish is perfectly fine with steelies. You ask if you should pass on them. While they are certainly cool, they are not really to be considered rare with the mintage they had. If you can pick them up go for it, but don't pay and arm and a leg just because they are 43's.

The smooth and chrome looking ones you see sometimes are re-plated. An honest coin perhaps a rung down on the scale is always better then something that has been altered.

If the steelies appear to be dusty, it would be best to avoid purchase because that dust would be zinc oxide which is fine if you are trying to avoid a sunburn but not fine when it is on your coins
