I see there is a '96 PL twoonie. Having said that, how was it issued in PL if its not in the '96 PL set?

The Canadian Mint put out some sets that had a $2.00 bill and a two dollar coin in a blue box maybe those are the PL coins? I'm only guessing.

papeldog, I was wondering the very same thing. I have seen those sets on ebay but the pics of the coins are never very good to really tell if its PL or BU.

In all the books and literature that I have and looked through I don't see anything on PL 1996 twoonie's. There are none recorded in the ICCS population report book either so I don't think they minted any if you have or find one you may have a gem worth keeping?

1996:
gold proof
silver Piedfort proof
base metal (Ni and AlCu) proof
business strike German planchet
business strike Canadian planchet
specimen strike in folder identified as "uncirculated"
there was no PL strike

Colonial Acres is selling a PL 1996 twoonie.

The Colonial Acres PL twoonie is most likely misattributed. As Ty will point out, graders, in general, are not familiar with this series yet. Unless I am mistaken, the only grading company, so far, that grades this series correctly and consistently is CCCS.

All grading services in US frequently misattribute business strikes, specimens and PLs (all 1996 MS65 in PCGS holders I examined are specimen strikes, all but 1 in NGC are specimen, the exception is a proof). ICCS miss the point with less frequency. CCCS is consistent

I seem to remember the year the toonie came out a proof-like example in it's own little box, just like how the single loonies and dollar coins were similarly released.

that was the usual presentation of the base metal proof.
because all (?) Canadian proofs are made of silver and that coin is not, it is frequently thought as a PL or business strike - it has all characteristics of a proof strike and the Mint identifies it as proof.

looks like a piedfort toonie is questionable...as I was looking back on old links here at the forum.

I bought one ( 1996 PL twoonie ) from Colonial Acres last year. But, actually it was specimen finished.
