Ok, so this last weekend we celebrated my parent's anniversary with a trip to Lake Tahoe. My sister had a timeshare in Genoa, so we stayed there and just happened to be 5 miles from Carson City. With some mild persuasion, I convinced my parents and wife to take a trip to the old Carson City mint; that is now the Nevada State Museum. Very neat place above and beyond just the Coin World....I'd recommend it to anyone near by. They take you through the entire mining/minting process, from raw ore and dirt, into a freshly minted coin. They also have a fascinating underground mine exhibit that really puts you into the miner's shoes and the environment they worked in....well minus the 130 degree temperatures and collapsing caves. Ok, anyways; back to the coins. They had a complete set of Carson City Coins! WOW! I was in awe, so I had to take some photos. They were behind steel bars.... I tried to reach in and touch, but my arms just weren't long enough.. Fortunately, no alarms were set off. Ok, here they are in all there glory. And yes, the 1876 cc 20 cent piece was with them! and even more, with some closeups. A quick shot of us at the mine exhibit.. Anyways, it was very fun and educational!

Yeah this is in my home town. Did you by chance visit the coin shop across the street? Here is the web address in case you did not get to see this coin in person. http://www.brokencc.com/Brokenccpics.php

Yeah, actually I did go to that shop. Absolutely amazing selection, and very friendly dealers! The dealer there showed me a chain cent, and AU-58 1795 Half Dime and all kinds of cool stuff just for conversation. I would have bought something if I had money to spend.

Looks like a great time; thanks for sharing! Hopefully I'll get around to visiting Carson City some time.
By the way, the fetching Mrs. Johnny Countdown must be a real peach to go along with this visit. Hopefully she had a good time, as well.

Johnny54321 they are a great bunch. I am a regular there, also they give you a better deal if you pay in cash verses credit or debit. If this is crossing the line I am sorry not intentional. I do not work there or receive any perks for advertising for these folks, but when I walk into this shop I am like a kid in a candy store.

Those coins look highly suspect. I think CC has been buying them from Chinese ebay sellers! Nice photos, thanks for posting. Mike

Very cool. Did you have the opportunity to distract the security guard and swipe a few of those coins?

So close!! All I want is 6 or 7 of them (ok, 20 or 30) That's not too much to ask, is it?

How neat. I was lucky enough to visit the New Orleans mint several years ago, pre-Katrina. Based on its location I think it would have been heavily damaged. Anyone know? And since we're on this vein, anyone know if there are mint museums in Charlotte or Dahlogena (sp?)?

The New Orleans Mint Museum ha a small portion of its roof damaged by Katrina and had some water damage from the leaking roof but the building was not severely damaged. They had taken the storm warnings to heart and had protected th exhibits and moved some things to safety before the storm hit. It was built on higher ground so it didn't have any flooding trouble.

I can also vouch for that shop in CC. I like the new facelift the place got after it changed over. Usually a good selection of large cents. Just up the road there is another in Virginia City that is another good one. Hole in the wall and great folks. Several good shops in that part of the state.
For those in that part of the state never underestimate the local pawn shops too. Always great coins in Northern NV.
